Hi! I'm moving to Akron soon for a job and I'd like to know if someone could tell me some of the neighborhoods where I should concentrate my housing search based on these things:
~ trendy reataurants nearby (and I'm not talking Olive Garden - something local using fresh ingredients would be nice, I love fine food and hate to cook)
~ walking distance to shops, etc
~ quiet, safe neighborhood
~ type of housing isn't important - I'd be happy with lofts, apartments, houses, condos, townhouses - pretty much anything!
If you've ever been to Columbus, something similar to German Village would be nice.
It could even be a suburb, I'm just looking for something that's near things to do - the background noise is nice to have :)
The closest thing you'll find to German Village is Highland Square. It's the only part of Akron that has the slightest bit of culture or is almost bohemian. It's also pretty pedestrian friendly.

Here are some good restaurants, stores, coffee shops:
Papa Joe's
The Italian Center (an ethnic club which only serves on Thurs. nights)
Devitis
Ninni's Bakery
Jimmy's Cafe
Babushka's Kitchen

I grew up in a VERY ITALIAN household in Cuy Falls, so Luigi's, Papa Joe's, DiLullos, Dontino's ..... they TRY to be Italian. I had Maggianos in Chicago (Clarke and Grand). That was the closest any restaurant had come to Mama's sauce and meatballs.
It depends where your family is from in Italy. Sauce is made differently in each region. If you're from Abruzzi, you'll love the food at Devitis and the Italian Center, because they make it the same way mama did.

Yes, we are Abruzzi. Still have family in Sant'Eufemia a Maiella - SW of Pescara.

Practically grew up in DeVitis. I love the smell in there .... and those pretty Italian girls !

Have you ever been to Maggianos ? They're showing up all over. Since eating at the one in downtown Chicago, I've been to the one in Charlotte and one in Atlanta.

My choices: Montrose area (but nothing is in walking distance, and traffic is a nightmare), Hudson (pricey but nice), or Tallmadge (still safe, and don't let the Circle scare you.) I love Kent, it has its historic areas, and not as expensive of housing. You can walk the downtown area. During the 'school year' college kids are out at night at the bars. I like Frankilin Deli, and we go into campus to Bradys Cafe. (better than the crappy starbucks that took the brady building)

Hello? Condo. Bath/Fairlawn. Does anyone remember that song from Sesame Street? "One of these things, is not like the other. One of these things just isn't the same."

I guess that is my misguided way of saying "Don't go Condo in my part of town". But, what the hell do I know, I just live there.

There are nice, quiet neighborhoods (Hudson, Fairlawn, Bath, "some" parts of Stow (still ?), "some" parts of Tallmadge (still ?), Green (?).
The clincher was fine food / dining. I'm not sure that fine food / dining is synonomous with NE Ohio.
There was a Lebanese (?) restaurant the last time I was in Hudson Square (2 -3 years ago). It was pretty good. Moe's on Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls ... other than that there's Swenson's (God, I miss a Galley Boy) and a Burger King near Fishcreek and Graham Road in Stow.
wow...Swensons was the bomb!!!..is that still there?..I was there every friday and sat night as a teen...half the kids I knew worked there at one time or another..

What does "showing its age" mean? That bar is one of the nicest in the Valley.

Max McQ's is still there, but it is really showing its age.
There was a new restaurant that tried to make a go of it at Carnaby St., but I haven't seen or heard anything about it, so it might be DOA.
Summit Co doesn't really have restaurants that are within walking distance, but we also have such little traffic that you can be anyplace in the county in 30 minutes.
We remain the "newspaper" county in an internet age...and that isn't a bad thing!:)

Yeah, we have that problem in Barberton too. I do my best to break down the barriers and make all feel welcome though.
