Council office seekers face off on street
Tarle says Reymann pulled gun during confrontation in Ellet. Prosecutor will review the facts
By Stephanie Warsmith
Former Akron Councilman Ernie Tarle says another ward's candidate pulled a gun on him over a dispute about campaign literature.
David Reymann says he felt threatened by Tarle and if Tarle had come a step closer, he would have shot him.
''He almost got it,'' said Reymann, an Army veteran who has a concealed-carry permit for his Beretta.
The city prosecutor's office is reviewing the confrontation, which happened Sunday morning as Reymann was delivering anti-Tarle literature to homes with pro-Tarle signs. Charges could be filed.
The Democratic candidates, who are running in different wards, have a history that dates to 1998, when Reymann led a successful campaign to recall Tarle from his Ward 7 council seat.
Tarle was charged with two counts of bribery for allegedly trying to pay off Reymann to drop out of the Ward 7 race and for handing an envelope filled with cash to another councilman before a council meeting. Tarle was recalled before his trial, in which he was acquitted of both charges.
Tarle, who denies trying to bribe the other councilman or Reymann, is trying to mount a political comeback. He is in a four-way race for the Ward 6 council seat in the Sept. 8 primary. The seat is open because Councilwoman Terry Albanese is running at large.
Reymann, who has run unsuccessfully for council multiple times, again is vying for the Ward 7 seat. He is among a slate of ''reform candidates'' for council that includes Wayne Kartler, one of Tarle's opponents.
Reymann has been working for the past several days to deliver fliers to Ward 6 houses with Tarle signs in their yards. His handouts claim Tarle was both a terrible councilman and businessman, a lawbreaker and someone who just wants a job.
''Don't vote for terrible Tarle!'' reads a line on the piece.
Reymann said he was passing out the fliers about 10 a.m. Sunday on Wirth Avenue when Tarle drove up in his pickup truck. He said Tarle looked like ''an animal charging down on me'' and told him,''I'm going to send people over to your house,''''You're going to get it,'' and ''This isn't over yet.''
Reymann said Tarle, who is several years younger and several pounds heavier, stepped toward him. Reymann pulled his holstered gun out of his pocket and pointed it at Tarle.
''I let him know I had a gun,'' he said.''If he kept coming at me, I was going to shoot him.''
Reymann said he wouldn't have pulled out his gun if he didn't feel threatened.
''If it was 10 years ago, I would have decked him,'' said Reymann, who is 69.''I'm too old now.''
Tarle, 44, gives a different account. He said he got upset after Reymann delivered one of the fliers to Tarle's house, handing it to his 10-year-old son.(Reymann said Tarle's son got a flier at a neighbor's house and took it home.)
He said he then tracked down Reymann and planned to go door-to-door behind him to counter the information, some of which he says is libelous.
Tarle said that as he passed Reymann to go to a resident's door, Reymann pulled out his gun. He said he told Reymann,''You're in trouble, mister,'' and left.
''The idea I threatened him is absolutely absurd,'' Tarle said.''These are the rantings of a mad man.''
Tarle said he didn't think Reymann was going to shoot and is glad he didn't.
Two residents who witnessed the confrontation said they saw Tarle take fliers from houses where Reymann had just delivered them. According to the police report, both said Tarle appeared angry, but they couldn't hear what was said between the two men.
Reymann thinks Tarle should be charged with aggravated menacing and theft for allegedly stealing his fliers.
Tarle thinks Reymann should be in trouble for coming to Tarle's home with a gun and for later pointing the weapon at him.

Deadeye Dave vs. Marco at ten paces.

Naw, they'd each only shoot themselves in the foot.

A city run by idiots. And they prove it time & time again for you. Yet people still vote for 'em. Amazin'.

Tarle told Rainman to get out of his hood or pay the tax. Rainman pulled out his cap gun and told Tarle there is a new sherrif in town and he better hightail it back to Kenmoore where he came from. Tarle squealed his bike tires and shot gravel all over Rainman.

Safety Director Plusquellic had them both brought in and will try them in Mayor's court tomorrow, the hanging will be at high noon in front of Bricco's. The Mayor said let this be a lesson to all who do not obey the law of Don.

I wouldn't vote for either of them. Dave Reymann has long been considered a bit wacky by most residents of Firestone Park, and nobody will ever forget Ernie Tarle's disgraceful exit from city council. Why does Reymann even care that Tarle is running for council in a ward he doesn't even live in? Let the residents choose for themselves.

They need to get rid of these councilman with such a checkered past. All these allegations and "iffy" housing operations, just check out your local councilmans record. Why have them represent you? They all seem to be the same. We need new people.

Moonpie, those chickens are a old democratic sign, Tarle, being a man of great intelect chose a historic connection. If he doesn't stay away from Rainman the chicken may not get to cross the road.

I hate to see Rainman use "Vote for me, I shot Ernie Tarle" as a campaign slogan." All of Ernie's ex's may be enough to elect Rainman in Ward 7.

So it's not a reference to local culinary favorites. OK.

I saw that chicken yesterday as I threw a Tarle sign out into Mogadore Road and thought "wow, a chicken."

Kinda like that old fast-food chain, "Mr. Chicken". Makes little sense, Demo-rat-ically, historically, poultry-wise or otherwise.

Guess one could call Rainman & Oil Can Ernie

The Gun Slinging Ghost and Mr. Chicken.
