Ugh, I hate this trend. I understand the airlines are businesses and need to make money. And that their costs are going up with rising fuel costs. But I'm afraid the commercials for Southwest that parody this stuff will soon be a reality. Want to use the bathroom, there is a charge. Charge for beverages. Charge to fold down the tray, or recline your seat, pillows, blankets, question for flight attendant.

Shoot, even with high gas prices, it is still cheaper to drive! These airlines are getting of control with their fees. I hope they all go bankrupt!!

Right---and the best answer is to boycott airlines with those excessive fees in favor of Southwest, Air Tran, etc, who---while still having fees---do not seem ready to milk the traveller for every last dime they can.

One should especially avoid Continental, since today's increase announced by them is even more Total Greed. Back in April when airlines started announcing the 2nd bag charge, oil was $115/barrel. By mid-summer, when these 2nd bag fees began oil was $145. Now, however, oil is back down to $106, so a 27% drop in oil prices back down to April levels should mean dropping that 1st bag fee. Instead, Continental adds a fee---showing it's pure greed.

And since some airlines are charging for pillows, cans of coke or water, etc, now, your comments re washroom/tray/etc charges are probably what's next.

I used to fly 5 or 6 times per year. Between all these fees and the TSA crap, I now fly once per year.

I thought those were Continental commercials, but perhaps I am remembering incorrectly. Flying is just so much fun anymore. Perhaps if they would price their tickets to reflect their actual costs they could do away with the BS fees. Pretty soon they can start to charge for overhead storage space.

Would guess the overhead storage charge concept has likely been fully discussed in all the airline boardrooms. They are at this moment likely figuring out how they can do so without losing the business crowd(a lot of whom don't check bags, but who overuse the carryon areas).

Much cheaper to drive...even the west coast can be cheaper to drive than fly these days, especially with the car rental added in.

As an example, Akron to St Louis. Flying would take you 7 1/4 hours to get there(most CAK flights are around 4hrs45min with connection, plus driving time to airport, arriving early enuf, getting your bags afterward, etc) and the plane ticket would cost $420(average basic ticket $310, plus charges for 2 bags & seat selection). Gas in my car for the same trip would be $115 and driving time 9 hrs.

So you'd pay $300 more to fly, and you'd save a whopping 1 3/4 hrs of time. That's not even counting the likelihood of needing a rental car if you fly, making the extra costs even worse.

My step mother was scheduled for a life-threatening surgery. Checked with Continental for a flight last weekend to Ohio with a 2 day notice. We have all the priority club points you would want and asked for the emergency rate. They told us $996. Needless to say I needed to change my thoughts of going to Ohio right then. I could have booked with a couple of other airlines for a non direct for about $500 cheaper. Of course that would mean an excruiating long lay over. I decided to wait until I saw more of a crisis need because it may have generated into 2 flights close together. BTW just a year ago I could do direct Continental flights from SFO to Cleveland for $425..sjt

Hmmm. A checked bag fee. Does this mean I have to pay extra for my mother-in-law ?

So what do you think is the reason for all the nasty icons on our comments? an upset airline employee since we dare to criticize them, or just someone being a wise guy.

You tell me. I thought I was contributing to the fact that Continental, along with all the airlines are riding the coat tails of the energy increases and really sticking it to the consumer. Did not think that was off topic. Just like charging for a checked bag, they are also charging much more for the plane tickets. Kind of the proverbial - "getcha coming and going", don't you think?...sjt

I went back and reread this post of yours and then looked at the post you have made.
No. 1, I want to apologize for my first answer. It appears selfish and self-serving. That was not my intent, I read this post very quickly and apparently read it wrong.

Now, to give you a more honest answer, I'm not sure. I think it could be either of your ideas. I do know that someone seems to follow a lot of my posts and marks them with the negative icons. I don't know if you have that situation as well. Overall, on one hand, due to some of the inappropriate icon tagging, I feel it's either kids or someone not very intelligent
