From what I've heard on the streets....some city workers are honoring the agreement, and others aren't...since the State Law is in question. That's beside the point, though.
Overall, I think that residency restrictions shouldn't be part of job requirements unless it impacts performance. I think it is reasonable to require people with safety and emergency response functions to reside within a certain radius of the center of the area that they serve...to ensure speedy availability. Otherwise, I think it's ridiculous.
However, our opinion on whether it's right or wrong is currently beside the point. The City put in residency rules for some reason in the past. The State tried to overrule them, and the State Law is in question...so the City is still legally allowed to enforce those rules, and all agreements signed are currently still legal.
The issue here isn't residency...it's whether the State has the right to overrule the City.
I guess the lesson here is this: Don't sign anything without reading the fine print and considering future risks...an employee agreement, mortgage papers, or payday loan agreement....because even if the worst-case-scenario happens, you are legally bound by your signature unless the law changes.
Do I think residency rules are right for all city employees? No. Do I feel for those who work for the city and therefore must reside there? Yes....the city has probably changed since they signed on the dotted line. However, there is a way out...and I know it's not as easy as it sounds...but as long as it's legal for the city to have residency rules there are only two options:
1. Keep your job and home, and keep your fingers crossed that the final decision will be in favor of State Overrulling Law.
2. Start looking for a new job outside of the city.
Anything else is a compromise of integrity and breach of contract at this point.
Yeah its a breach of contract.....When I was 24 and looking for a job in law enforcement....my goals in life were a little different then when I am in my 30's....with a family....I have arrested 100's of people and deprived them of there liberty by sending them to jail.......but when I am at the local grocery store ...with my family...and recognized as a cop by one of the great thugs of Akron....then my family life is compromized....The city never stated this would happen during my interview, or the fact that my house would depreciate in value.....And I am not sure what you mean by speedy availability....The city would be too cheap to call in officers if there was such an emergency that officers would have to respond from home......

What does Akron have to offer. If I live in Tallmadge, I have perks. If I lived in Cuyahoga Falls I get perks. The city of Akron has it's palms up for your money. I would be a happier worker and more apt to come to work and do the best performance I can, if you would keep my personal preference of where I live out of your thinking. Akron has many venues to offer; but, you have to pay like any other tourist and outside resident. Tallmadge and Cuyahoga Falls residents get discounts. It's a no brainer why people want to move a city over (not to mention feeling safer). Also, we don't have to see a Council President break the law and get away with it. Stop dictating other people's lives and behave like a grown-up, Mayor Don.

The City has a population of 210,000. About 2,000 employees make up the City's work force. Are you telling me that all 2,000 will up and move out?! I doubt it! So all this conversation is about - maybe - a half-percent of the population of Akron possibly moving out. That's not going to make or break anything for the City.
Nobody has broken any contracts that I've heard of because they are fired if they do. The question that remains is - is it constitutional to require them to sign the contract in the first place. This is America...we are all supposed to have certain freedoms and rights.

You know what the saddest part of it all is? I was researching residency requirements and how they are being overturned in cities around the U.S. when I came across Boston. They have lifted the residency requirements because they are booming so much that city workers can't afford housing in their city. Wouldn't that be a nice problem to have? A city strong and booming so they lift residency for employees to live outside the city, instead of a city on the decline where workers want to scatter like rats from a sinking ship?

Personally, I can say that if I signed an agreement, I would keep it. If I signed it and then my life, and therefore my priorities changed and I could no longer keep the agreement that I signed, then I would switch jobs instead of compromising my word and integrity.
Again...that's just me. My signature and my word are all I have, and I would personally take the high road and remove myself from a situation that no longer suits me than remain in the situation and renege on an agreement I had made.
I once had a job where I travelled approximately 50% of the time. I got married, and decided I didn't want to travel anymore. Instead of demanding that the requirements of the job 'flex' to suit me, I found a job that didn't have travel as a requirement. But, again...that's just me. When I worked there, there were people who agreed to the travel terms, and then complained about it later. That's their choice. I'm just stating what my choice would be, if I were an Akron employee in this situation.

All I have to say is that the city employs people under an at-will employment agreement. That means nothing is keeping the worker at the employer. If you do not want to live in Akron, find another job. If you want to work for the city, then play by the rules. No one is keeping you from finding another job.
I'm sorry, but do you live in the same Ohio as me with the same shitty economy? Yeah, jobs are just falling from the trees!?

Oh, I see, you also have to have a family before you get hired by a city? How dare anyone take a city job and then start a family- USE YOUR HEAD. Also, must you marry a city worker.
I'm not saying that at all.

I'm just saying that one can't expect his/her employer to change the agreed-to terms of employment because the employee's life and priorities change. The employee should consider what might change in his/her life before agreeing to terms of employment.

Your mom and I fight a little bit. Whenever she gets liquored up, she starts rubbing up against me. She always whispers in my ear, "I want to wrestle your big bald champion."

And I always let her.

And she always pins the champ.

Who in their right mind would want to live in the city of Akron, Cleveland or Canton? Can you imagine being a cop in these cities, putting up with the low life scum day in and day out and then having to live with them!

Speaking of maturity and adult showcases, it reminds me of the time I treated to your mom to a night at the adult cinema. That woman was a fireball.

We left the theater at the end of a long night of adult activities. I'd like to think I matured a little that evening. She taught me and 37 other gentlemen things we'd only read of in books about Southeast Asia. Out of all the teachers I've ever had, your mom was by far the stickiest.

Us lucky fellas not only learned lessons on what could be done with ping-pong balls, a lit cigarette, and a lariat - I think we all learned a little bit about life. What a gal. You mom is tops in my book.

Everybody is a tough guy on the internet. At least that's what your mom told me in between gasps for air.

That lady is a trooper. You come from fine breeding stock. I'm going to make an honest woman out of her one day, if I don't run out of money first.
