Angry about energy costs in rural Alaska

Full story: Juneau Empire

Here we are, the United States, in an energy crunch, or so it would appear. We Alaskans have energy-rich land, chock full with minerals and natural gas, and cannot provide an answer to any of our worldly ...

Here, here! Energy costs to those living in the Bush have skyrocketed while our government reaps a pretty big part of the benefits. The citydwellers in our fair state have been heard to say that we "choose" to live here and so imply that we should just suck it up. Well, I guess what that means is that I should pack up and move to town. Ne'er ye mind that I work in a very difficult place doing a job lots and lots of other people can't do. Maybe I will move to town, and maybe it's your job I'll "choose" to take. Cheers!

Hear ye, hear ye! You're darn right bush people might have to move to the big city! Survival in the bush becomes more and more difficult. With utility, fuel oil, gas, food increases that are unreal and no cost of living increase in employment to match it...how can we survive in the bush?? Can you afford to pay $10 for gas and/or fuel oil? How about cable tv and internet service at $100 or more /month? More and more move and attempt to sell houses but who will buy them? Bethel is flooded with houses for sale and not many think about buying but why should they when all we hear is how prices of everything is going up. Milk is nearly $10/gallon, potatoes at $20 for a 10 pound bags...and there's no pay increase to match cost increases...and the city wants to raise the city tax again...it just went up to 6% on everything? When does it end? How can we survive? Guess we better move to the big city but that means you'd better have at least $300 for a one way ticket out of Bethel...if it hasn't gone up again too...
The fuel bill was $1200/month before increases...how can I afford $3000/month to stay warm? I work all the time now...where's the extra money to buy a toyo stove for efficiency...there's no wood here for wood stoves so you gotta go up river but that requires a boat and gas...eeks! How to survive the bush? Don't know...BAIL!!!

Alaska has no laws to cover price fixing. Anything goes. In Anchorage competition helps control prices.
In Bethel, the stores, and the one and only fuel company get all the market will bare. That means all you can pay. You can make $25 per hour in Bethel, or $5 per hour in the lower 48, and live the same. By the way, that tax increase to 6% was suppose to be for a swimming pool. Wow! Just what we need!!!
Everyone in Bethel is working there way out.
Almost $6 a gallon for gas,and triple price for food.
I wonder how many will stay and make it.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Libra

Don't put yourself through anything that isn't absolutely necessary, Libra. After all, why cook when others will gladly serve you at their house, or treat you to a wonderful meal at your favourite restaurant? Even when you assert yourself, there seems to be a wonderfully passive quality to your manner. Now that the universe has finally decided to give you some of what you want, make sure your wish list is short and don't be greedy.
