Nay, chalk one up for property owners against abusive neighbors. You can do what you like with your property, but that right stops right at the property line.

Nay, victory for concerned citizens group, loss for entire township. They want to force farmers to their ideas of how farming should be and then complain about farmers selling land for houses. They can't blame farmers for wanting to sell now. So much for Peach Bottom Township staying a nice farming comunity.

Nay, if you don't want to live around a farm then don't move into a rural area. Of course, if this kind of situation keeps happening it won't be rural for long. This area will just be one more suburb of Baltimore with development after development that will raise our school/property taxes more and more.

I think what they meant was that the soil type where this venture was to happen, is actually of superior quality for crops, and would be a waste to be used for a "pig factory."
I agree wholeheartedly that the number of developments the rich guys want to keep building is absurd. If you couldn't sell what came off 500 acres of corn, would you keep buying up land so you could farm 5000 acres of corn? That is exactly what these "suits" have been doing, and it has ruined some of the best land, and, of course, is causing a tremendous economic upheaval that now the White House will want the responsible little guys to pay for.
Meanwhile, with gas prices going higher, with no end in sight, the days of huge agri-business concerns could be over, because they are all predicated upon cheap transportation of supplies into these farms, and product out of these farms to distances far and wide.
Hang on. The little farmer may once again be the salvation of the surrounding cities. Wouldn't that be neat for a change?

My family resides very close the the proposed area, I understand both sides of the issue. However, beyond the fact that it is going to contaminate the soil, water and air the hogs in these "CAFO's" are neglected and abused. They grow up in an extremely cramped space that causes deformaties to their snouts and hoofs. I am familar with the Gemmill family and wish them the best with out going this route. Keep us Rural but please no HOGS!

As the soil seems to be of better than average quality, perhaps the owners could look into doing part of the land as a CSA? Community supported Agriculutre is a system where a farmer plants a reasonable amount of ground in mixed veggies, etc. and sells "shares," for better and for worse, to people interesteed in food items raised organiclly. often, the farmer can expect the share owners to come help with some work, etc. and the shareholders get a nice selection of locally-grown, no-toxic chemical, good for you stuff to eat.
CSA's have been around for a while and are really starting to catch on, even in York County.

I think some of your facts our wrong. If you really research the facts about some of these units. You will find a ton of studys that show how well pigs do in stalls verses open areas. Pigs allways clam there areas in an open areas. THey thend to fight and beat each other up and some times it ends in death. I know people dont like to see it or think its cruel but thats the way it seems to work. As far as pigs beeening treated cruely or beating that falls on the farmer. Who really would have to be a jerk. You have to love these animals and respect them. And you have to give them one on one attention. Which there are farmers like us that do that and even names our pigs and pet them like dogs. But I also understand some are just greedy and want the money and dont care for the wellfare of there animals. But plaese dont judge all pig farmers because you here a couple bad stories.
