i wish there was some way the police could put an end to some of this. i work in a business and some of these people are so bold that they come in and ask the employees for money or other things. bad for business, bad for the community in general.

somehow i don't think i'd find Jesus hanging out at the crack motel in town, smoking cigarettes, drinking, and making the rounds asking for money. please correct me if i'm wrong.

The "crack motel" is exactly the kind of place you would find Jesus if he was on earth today. Just about everybody that he associated with 2000 years ago were social misfits and outcasts. He didn't hang out with the priests of the Temple, the comfortably well off, and upright citizens.

The social misfits and outcasts Jesus associated with found the salvation He preached and they changed their lives. They didn't all sit around and chill or walk around town begging for money to buy their next fix, or to buy food because they spent all their money on their last fix.

I understand compassion and forgiveness, I also understand that tolerance isn't what we should be practicing. You can only help a person so much; if they aren't willing to help themselves, they aren't ever going to change.

So, yeah, Jesus would be there at the crack motel, but He'd be there spreading His message of salvation, not hanging out and getting liquored up.

And the priests of the Temple and their followers would be complaining about it - just like you are!

They should be arrested and shipped south to Orlando where it is warm and they wouldn't get sick living outside. Also people on vacation are generous and the dumpster-diving should be pretty good.

That is correct,(sir?). We need to show compassion for those who are less fortunate. Also, they could be given a selection of religious pamphlets to read on the way down. Maybe some organization like Planned Parenthood or the NAACP could take the lead. President Obama should weigh in on this and start a free clinic for these poor souls.

“VATICAN CITY (AP)— When he was archbishop of Buenos Aires, Pope Francis was known to sneak out at night and break bread with the homeless, sit with them literally on the street and eat with them, as part of his aim to share the plight of the poor and let them know someone cared…”

Seems like Pope Francis is a Christian who understands what Jesus taught, unlike some folks in Vidalia.

I didn't know Pope Francis smoked, let alone smoked crack. I guess you would have to understand the problem I know mother Teresa did but that was sniffing fumes and not glue. I wonder if all priests smoke crack to learn about their flock.

It is hard for me to believe that the Vidalia / Toombs County law would tolerate anyone walking around town smoking crack.

If I had to bet, I'd bet that the people that you think are dope heads are actually insane. Case you did not know, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a few years ago that insane people who are not an immediate danger to themselves or others may not be confined in mental hospitals against their will. As a result a huge population of formerly institutionalized crazy folks were turned out on the streets. A great many of them became homeless panhandlers.

The original post never mentioned anything about being homeless. I work out of Vidalia and get pressured for change or cigarettes on a daily basis by individuals that are quite obviously not homeless. Yes, there are homeless in Toombs and the surrounding counties but to be honest the people being referred to are anything but. I have been approached no less than ten times in the last three months by folks wearing sneakers that were more expensive than my whole outfit or sporting headphones and iPhone that cost more than than a month of the entire income of some folks I know. I have had several encounters that were way too intense for my liking and recently obtained my concealed weapons permit primarily because I feel so unsafe in Vidalia anymore.
