Since relocating to Aiken from a Mid-Atlantic urban area, it's appalling to me to observe so many fatal motor vehicle accidents in this area where people are ejected. Seat belts have been available and then mandatory for more than fifty years. And where I spent a large portion of my life, nearly every driver chooses to be safe. I just can't get my head wrapped around why otherwise intelligent people don't buckle-up as a habit. Is this a southern thing? I have heard all the stupid rationalizations there are. All one needs to do is actually check the objective statistics and you would understand that you are exceedingly more likely to be killed or maimed in 99% of accidents by not wearing a seat-belt. So, if you want to be macho or independent, then go-ahead. I'm sure your kin will arrange a nice, dignified service for you. But remember this, killing yourself will hurt many more people than you might think. I see the suffering in the faces of parents and others every day. They are serving a life sentence of grief.
