Surprise, surprise: DOT's technique of dumping gravel in potholes and stomping on it didn't work. Who would have guessed; it has never worked. How many millions did we waste "repairing" potholes this year? Oahu needs to properly resurface its roads. DOT obviously does not know how to properly repair potholes. Is this the same crew we are entrusting our billions to build a mass transit system?

No, it's not the DOT.

It's worse.

It's the city that will build the rail.

I watched the city fill a wet hole and tamp the fill material down with a shovel.

You're right that they are wasting our money on time and material costs.

However, you can bet that some clueless talking head like Tami Mori will report on tv that the state filled a record number of holes with no follow-up story by our fluff media on how long the band-aid patch job lasted.

The state and city are separate entities when it comes to patching potholes.
The objective for filling potholes are: Quantity and not Quality. The city's objective, more potholes filled more accomplished.

Putting shovels of asphalt in a pothole filled with loose gravel and water and tapping it down with the shovel and expect the traffic to compact it down. This creates tar to stick on the underside of the car and instead of driving over a hole, you're now driving over a bump. Very shortly the potholes reappear and they go through the same process.

Doing the job with quality, I would have an air compressor tagged along and blow all the loose gravel and water out of the pothole, coat the hole with tar, insert the asphalt and finally tamper the asphalt down. This might take longer but I.m sure the patch will last longer and not end up being a bump or having to patch the same hole again.

Is it worth the tax payers money to sacrifice quantity for quality? If the city or state crew cannot perform quality work than it's time for the state and city privatizing the job. It's about time that the workers take pride in their job including the supervisors.

I got an idea.
Some of these pot holes are so deep that we can just put a post in the hole for Mufi's choo choo. No need to dig, hence saving money. Since it's all over the place, on every road on Oahu we can have rail all over the island!. See Romy, Salt Lake can have it's rail system after all.

There is a machine that quickly and efficiently fixes potholes using laser, but Mufi wouldn't buy it because it would eliminate voters (city workers) standing around holding shovels.

I'm typing this from my ipod at the bottom of a pothole stuck in my SUV. Cars are driving around me and I think there's a crew trying to fill me in.
Opps, my bad it's just another car on top of me.

Just moved back to Hawaii. Can anyone out there fill me in on the solution (if any) provided by our City officials to this "Plethora of potholes popping up" problem?

<quoted text>Big J., That is exactly what I was talking about here in PA and that is why I went to the council meeting to make a suggestion to fix the problem. Which council did. That is exactly what they were doing which did nothing to solve the pot hole problem. I am glad they took my suggestion and took out the machine roller and packed down the patch. I'm not very smart but that is commonn sense to me. A big Mahalo and Aloha from Northeast PA.
glenn, that will NEVER happen in Hawaii. If they actually fixed the roads, the DOT would have less work = need for less employees. This way, they have built-in job security.

If the crook politicians utilized the taxes collected for its intended purposes instead of their special interests and social services everything would be fine (highway/vehicle taxes to roadways instead of the field of dreams, "shelters," etc.). Did you expect any better in the People's Republic of Hawaii? All is fine in Oz!
