Jack is right. Keep an eye on your kids. Don't have children if you can't provide them with proper supervision. It's dumb to leave a kid unattended near a balcony.

WOW, you guys got all of that from a story that didn't even tell the whole story. Why don't you ask the reporter to write the full story on this. I only got part of the story.

Jack is right, but a bit harsh. This is clearly an act of neglect. Someone was not watching the child appropriately. Every once in a while this happens, and it is most always due to neglect. In an extreme case, that is what happened with poor Baby Cyrus. He was not being watched appropriately, and someone took him. Very sad, but fortunately the girl did not die.

The only thing I understand is the girl fell and got injured. There is no other story to the story..
Stop making excuses for adults, accountability is definitely lacking.
No child should be permitted to go onto a balcony without adult supervision. Feel for the little girl, not the dysfunctional parents.
Geez....

What a shameful comment. Are you one of those non-judgmental Christians we hear so much about (you know,'judge not, that ye be not judged'?)

I hope the girl and her family is ok. That said, I think 4 yrs old is old enough to know you should be careful near the balcony. Can't blame the parents just yet.

You are so very judgemental about people. Just cause you have a better life than others doesn't mean that EVERYONE is the way YOU think. Unfortunately, not everyone is like you and you seem to be running away from the main topic. As sad as it is, bad things to happen and sometimes parents are not always as attentive as they would like to be. What is sad is that why does a 4 yr old have access to a balcony. We should be doing some sort of child proofing. We need to remember that children grow and learn at an alarming rate so anything is very possible. Children have always amazed adults with what they learn everyday. We need to realize this and never take it for granted. Blessed it be the innocence of a child! Also we as adults need to remember that their innocence depends on us to keep them safe!

There are a lot of irresponsible parents out there. You see them all the time talking on their cell phones and not paying attention to their kids.

Accidents do happen. My daughter received stitches when she was 2 from jumping on the couch while I was in the kitchen cooking. Did I blame myself? Ofcourse, but accidents happen and unless you are a parent who constantly keeps their children on leashes, you shouldn't judge.
Your situation was an ACCIDENT... unfortunately this girl will need a lot more than 2 stitches. I'm sure that if your couch was at the edge of a 3rd floor balcony, you would have been much more vigilant.

I agree with Jack (but maybe a little less harsh)- be accountable for your actions. If you can't do a good job of taking care of your kids, don't have them!!!

well i'll be glad to brag that i have a better life than those that live in the pupu and aniani streets. its filthy, stink, filled with savages, dope heads, chronic alcoholics, trouble makers, and murderers that haven't killed yet. i really feel sorry for the minute number of good people who live there. sadly, anyone who would dare to take a stroll there any time of the day/week/month/year will agree, the place is a slum and should be blown up. that place breeds poverty, disease, and crime.

sorry, but the truth hurts.

Since I live "in the Pupu streets, I feel that I need to comment on this. You know,Poo-Poo, I feel as if maybe you are part of the Pupu Area. Yes, we have our problems---however so do all areas on the island!!! Please don't single out one area because of a horrific accident. That said---my prayers go out to this little girl AND her parents!! Imagine what the future holds for them!! But for the grace of God--goes any one of us.
Instead of pointing fingers--can we do something positive to help the problem?? I live in a high apartment building with lanais. One of our houserules is that we cannot have anything near the edge to climb on. SOOO---what if??---when we see a potentially dangerous situation---we suggest to our neighbor to move the item and make it safer??? With so many families in the area---we should ALL be concerned and try to HELP one another---not CONDEMN!!!!!!!!!! But Poo-Poo, I know deep in your heart of hearts, you genuinely feel for this "little one".
LET'S ALL HELP---NOT HURT!!!!!

Kdeezy -i hate to break it to you, but a FOUR year old is NOT mature enough to be counted on to make good decisions. a PRESCHOOL child may have a clear understanding that something is bad (running in the street, hitting brother, etc...), but it is well known that a four year old is incapable of the abstract thinking necessary to assess the gravity / risks of the situation.

A four year old understands that if they run in the street, mommy gets mad and they get spanked. A four year old cannot understand the permanence of death, the personal and family suffering that follows a traumatic brain injury, the financial strain of caring for a severely handicapped child / adult, etc...

I hope you supervise your own children better than this family. You are a responsible adult.

Start taking responsibilty.

Plenty of potential blame here.

1. Who was watching the child? An adult? An teenager? Another child only a few years older?

2. Who moved the chair and how long had it been there? Kids are curious, and they can move things.

3. Are the parents irresponsible welfare bums who were out somewhere stoned on drugs (as some previous contributors have suggested), or are they decent hard-working folks who were both at work trying to make enough money to cover their rent and other living expenses?

Here's hoping that the little girl recovers with no lasting injuries!

rules? what are they good for? no one follows them. just take off your blinders and look around. thank god i don't live there. i would kill myself if i was forced to live there. can't believe you would actually be proud to live there. no, you are wrong, no place in the state of hawaii comes close to the problems that you guys have in your neighborhood. why do you think first responders take their time going to emergencies there? why help people who don't pay taxes? perhaps you should talk to all your neighbors... oh wait, do you speak micronesian or samoan? perhaps if they know that if they begin to act like civilzed people, pay their taxes, and actually take care of the things they own and the places that they live in, the people looking in might begin to treat them a little differently.

PooPoo, you are a racist. You were OK with bashing the drug addicts, low lifes, non-taxpayers...up until you generalized that all were "micronesian or samoan." Then I lost all respect for your argument.
