Fondest aloha's to both of the pedestrians. May the good Lord be with them.

I think one reason for a lot of the hit and runs is the drivers have no insurance.

My opinion is that Hawaii's "no fault" law is to blame because it forces everyone to have insurance, which not everyone can afford, so many people drive without it.

They are just taking the chance that they won't be caught....and if they are involved in a crash, they simply drive off.

It is happening more and more, as other drivers with no insurance see the media stories and read the paper and hear about how another driver hit someone, drove off, and got away with it!

So why shouldn't I run too?

All these uninsured drivers in turn, drives UP prices for the law abiding citizens who do have no-fault insurance.

The prices are raised because they have to add additonal insurance like "UNINSURED" and "UNDERINSURED" coverage.

Who benefits the most from this nonsense? The insurance companies!

They are making bank in Hawaii thanks to this No-Fault Insurance rule.

I lived in other places where having car insurance was NOT mandatory. And rates were extremely affordable and I never saw as many hit and runs there as I see in Hawaii.

It's sad that another pedestrian was killed, but stupidity doesn't rest with drivers alone. Many pedestrians walk onto the roadways with their head up their butt giving no consideration to what a several thousand pound vehicle can do to their body. Those that suddenly step on to the roadway without looking, the turtle walkers, the yackers whose mouths are going faster than their feet, the ones who cross when the don't walk light is flashing, the eaters, the jay-walkers, the cell phone users, the ones connected to a mp3 player off in la la land, the nose pickers, etc.,etc., etc. Pretty much doing everything but getting from one side to the other as quickly as possible.
You are 100% right. I can't agree more...

This is all due to the LACK of enforcement.........the enforcement that chinatown is now crying about........they dont care about people getting killed on our streets just the drug crime etc.

I agree that pedestrians try the patience of many drivers. However, a change in attitude toward pedestrians may help drivers deal with all of the above walking styles of pedestrians. Courtesy and prudence can't be legislated, we can't change the attitudes of people, so it's up to us individual pedestrians and drivers to work together. Whenever I'm behind the wheel, I see pedestrians as a risk factor and drive defensively. If I don't encounter the type of pedestrians you describe, than I consider myself lucky, for that day!
