Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Question : If I remember correctly, a while back you wrote about the procedure required for anyone wanting the police to drive by a home while the owners are on vacation.

Those house checks are a nice PR touch by HPD, but a waste of time, since they don't actually prevent anything from happening. Your neighbor could do the same thing, as well as take in your mail and newspaper.

Back in the 1980's, my grandparents requested that HPD check their home while they were on vacation. When they came home from vacation, their home was robbed--and that was the only time their house ever got broken into. Many years later, an internal HPD investigation found that cops were tipping off crooks as to which houses had vacationing owners. People should never trust HPD. Instead, buy a few $3 light timers and have a (non-HPD) friend check your home while you are away.
