Stoves should be designed to remain off after a power failure, like most modern appliances (TVs, computers, etc.). How much would this cost to implement?

How tragic! More specific reminders from HECO and the media would help. I was surprised myself at how many things were on in my home, especially lights on 3-way switches--I can't tell whether they are on or off--and the danmed water pic, which was shooting water all over the bathroom. Anyway, my heart goes out to the families suffering loss.

Why should they sue HECO since they left the appliances on? The first thing my husband and I did after the power failure, was to gather flashlights, batteries, and candles. The second was we went through our entire house making sure everything was turned off. We made three runs to make sure we didn't miss anything. You should also make sure everything is off whenever you leave the house, too. I am sorry for their loss, but they need to take some personal responsibility. My brother-in-law lost quite a few of his big appliances and had to replace them and some of the electrical wiring in his house during the earthquake when the power returned and he didn't blame anybody, but himself for overlooking those appliances.
