Normally I would say that this is another case of over-protection and political correctness blown out of proportion by well intended but misguided publik skool administrators. However, since it was a BB gun I'll give the skool the benefit of the doubt, but only only for this incident, they shouldn't expect this sort of consideration from me each and every time they wet their undies.

I am sure without this "intervention" this child in Elementary School would have grown up to reenact Columbine. "Remember the Alamo" rings more true. Give us a break. We used to be able to walk around with 22 rifles or bring them to school for hunting afterwards. No Columbines back then. |

Im a student. And i think that its stupid of them to do that. Now i could see if it was a real gun. But, come on a fake one. Get the kid some counsouling. But, dont suspend them. He was only a 4th grader!

1 You all need to reevaluate your policies and allow for flexibility on cases that are obvious. There are times for such decisions. A "One Size Does Not Fit All" in this scenario. Managment needs to resign over this...but wait, you will not do this because you need to look out for yourselves!! Pass the buck to the lowest denominator...suspend the 4th grader! Did this kid REALLY do any harm? He is just a kid! Management needs to re-evaluate, re-think, re-write, and maybe, RESIGN! A FOURTH GRADER!!! You rules make you a laughing stock of education. |

1 It shoots a small rubber BB about 10 yards. In other words a TOY. A toy that can't be confused for a real gun. Point blank to the skin barely stings. What would happen if a kid took a rubber knife to school? Should he be suspended or expelled? Let the punishment fit the crime. Zero tollerance is a management and legal COPOUT. |

These so-called "educators" are really getting carried away calling a toy pistol that shoots soft plastic pellets a "bb gun". That's what happens when you let hens peck you into submission.
Give the kid detention for a day, but one week's suspension is really NUTSO! |

1 First off, let me say this. I guess you better start cutting off hands and banning pencils and pens at schools too since they could be used as "weapons". Just about anything could be used as a "weapon". The rule at the school, if the word "weapon" is used, is far too broad. So you never did something that your parents told you not to do? How do you know that this lady did not tell her kid not to take the BB gun to school? And how do you know she sis not check his bag before he left and he snuck it in after she checked. I believe big time in discipline in the home and I know that my kids are sneaking around doing things that I told them not to do. I have even led my kids by example, and guess what, they still do it! People need to take a hard look at themselves before they start condemning the parents of any kid. Hell I bet any parent on this board could be "investigated" for one thing or another. Gangs must be awful desperate if they are recruiting 4th graders into their ranks. |

King Jeremy, you've said it!! The punishment should definantly fit the crime. The schools have the ability to use their discression in these cases, but they choose to take it to the max.
As a mother of a 5th grader who loves guns and anything to do with them I understand how this mother must feel. At one point we took all the guns away to see what would happen. He made them out of paper and duct tape!!! Origami guns!! Very creative! And before anyone asks the question, I'll answer, NO I do not have real guns in my house, I will not allow them around my children. |
