Actualy federal prison is like a resort compared to real jail. It's all white collar criminals. I heard they have some really nice facilities. Pools and all that. Research it.

It is a lot less costly to put them in a minimum security prison. They are not violent. But federal system does not have parole and the country club prisons can be 1000s of mile away from your family.

So I'd rather spend time in a luxury prison 1000 miles away
under ground than any real prison around here.

Ol' Bernie Madoff stole billions of $'s from people, but because they had already paid their taxes on the money invested, the Feds could care less even after one of their own blew the whistle on Bernie's operation 3 times in 10 years.
But, screw the IRS out of a couple bucks up front & watch out! You'll get steam rollered, screwed, blewed & tatooed.
Yeah - Bernie got his, but only because the feds had nothing else to do. These guys got the full weight of the feds on them almost immediately. Why? because the feds weren't getting their cut up front!
To all the citizens who still think this is the land of the free and the home of the brave - boy are you a bunch of misled suckers!!!
The law is the law and they got caught because the feds were doing their job.If the rest of us did the same thing would you still think it is O.K.? Live beyond your means and sooner than later you will have to pay the piper and not paying the IRS is not the answer. The got caught at a felony and that requires "payment".

Simple, they cheated (cut corners) and got caught. They rolled the dice and lost. Pay whatever fines, deal with the punishment and move on with your lives. It does not get any simpler than that, not a conspiracy, not Big Brother, nothing but two guys got caught cheating in the game of life. Now let's move on. Life is way too short as it is.

Hey Ayn Rand:

With your holier than thou attitude - whadya hidin' from up there in the sticks of Maine?

My guess is you're just another one of them abusers who run to the woods so no one can see or find you doin' your dastardly deeds. But, you got mouth enough to pronounce your beliefs as being the only true ones that everyone should be judged by!

C'mon out & down to civilization & get yourself a dose of reality therapy. or are you too afraid your liberal version of things won't work out for ya?

I'm gonna go up there and slaop your woo woo for ya!

Remember what they did to the North Adams slumlord for scamming the feds? One year and a big fine and that is getting off easy.

should it matter.
Look at all the tax cheats in the POS POTUS has advising him.
BTW get ready to pay more taxes.

'Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and National Economic Council Director Larry Summers both sidestepped questions on Obama's intentions about taxes. Geithner said the White House was not ready to rule out a tax hike to lower the federal deficit; Summers said Obama's proposed health care overhaul needs funding from somewhere.'

Once again the government thinking it knows best on how to spend your money.

This person is a moron. They don't even know that secure internet access redirects IP addresses.

And then they go on to attempt to counter an incribly sound and rationale argument by 1) suggesting that there is something wrong with Maine, a state of the US, and 2) violence.

Yep. This person is a moron.

Yes We all understand that its important to pay taxes so the feds can spend them on things we don't want or need. However how much does the irs and doj spend going after 2 carpenters with a pickup truck? How much will actually be re-paid? These guys just sound like they are dumb and dumber - but they are hardly bernie madoffs. I suggest that this type of situation doesn't require criminal charges be filed etc. All they should have to do is file estimated returns for the years in question, pay the tax, pay the interest, pay a stiff penalty. We don't need a federal prosecutor and a federal judge to deal with this type of low level stuff. They should be working on handling big time crooks and drug dealers etc.
I agree. I can't believe they face this much prison time and fines if convicted. Drug dealers and murders do less time. Let's get our priorities straight and put away the dangerous people.

MY guess is, they got caught because some individual that was working for cash got told he wasn't needed anymore. He had no income comming in and the wife was getting well you know crabby (not my first choice), as wifes will do when there is no money to pay the rent---food--gas--electric. She's a little mad and tells him to go sign up for unemploment, he just wants to make his wife happy (don't we all) so he does. not perfect but a better scenerio than the feds doing there job.

I believe that with the kind of money we're talking about with Madoff, his connections likely ran right up to the White House door, and that's why he could such a quick plea deal, because they all knew that if he didn't,he would testify to Cheney and who knows who else's involvement, and my guess is they gave him the choice of either going it alone,or being killed after they wiped out his family,or something along those lines. Do you recall back when the first Bush was president, how they found the letter he sent to the IRS Commissioner telling him only to go after people making $100,000 a year or less, because he knew they would'nt have the means to fight them in court. Yeah, the little guy always gets it stuck you-know-where.

Prosecution of these two is a very good use of public (our) funds.
They will likely be convicted and forced to pay taxes plus penalties (including cost of prosecution), which is only fair.
Otherwise they are benefitting from things like paved roads, military & police service, trash pick-up, etc. that we law-abiding taxpayers are paying for.
The Income Tax is used ONLY to pay the interest on the debt owed to the Federal Reserve banksters, and woould not be missed if it were abolished.

You would do well to spend some time at www.midasresources.com to view the material on the origins of the Federal Reserve and the real reasons it was created. Maybe then you'll begin to understand why both the Federal Reserve and the IRS/Income Tax are bogus.

Many people are aware of the illegitimacy of the system but cross their eyes and dot their T's because the IRS terrorists (look up the definition) make life hell for dissenters who are unable financially to resist them. It has been estimated that fully 50% of the U.S. Congress pay no Income Tax. Why do ya s'pose that is?? Why are so many Obamanoids in D.C. tax scofflaws?
