Finding an honest furnace or air conditioner review is hard because everyone is biased in one way or another. I decided to write this furnace review to give my opinion with facts that I have accumulated over the years.
I have been repairing and installing furnaces and air conditioners for 21 years so I have a good amount of experience in the subject.
I have found that furnaces have evolved over the years to a point now where the manufacturers are offering a high quality product that will last many years. When high efficiency furnaces first came out, each manufacturer had its own idea on how to build a furnace and by trial and error they slowly worked out the problems to where now they are all are building a good furnace.
The furnace manufacturers actually just build the heat exchanger, cabinet, housings etc. They buy the circuit boards, motors, burners, controls, limit switches, draft inducers, pressure controls, gas valves, ignition controls, and hot surface igniters from the companies that build them like GE, Honeywell, White Rodgers, Robertshaw, etc.
You generally read comments about furnace brands that have a negative slant. This is because people who have had a bad experience tend to have the drive to tell the world about it while the people who are satisfied are content to leave it at that. The truth is every brand has to be repaired now and then and since the manufacturers who build the main working parts of the furnaces build them for every furnace manufacturer, I do not see a big difference in number of repairs from one brand to the next.
Then how should you choose which furnace brand to buy? It is important to purchase your furnace from someone you can trust to install it properly and who will back up the warranty if something should go wrong later on. I recommend that you try to buy locally so you are important to the business that you are buying from and not just another anonymous customer who does not matter. The manufacturers warranty is a big factor to look at. If the furnace does break in the future, you don't want to be stuck with a large repair bill. Today you can find lifetime warranties on heat exchangers and 10 years on all other parts. If they don't offer this warranty, keep looking because some do and it is better to let the manufacturer pay for the repair instead of you. After all if they spend all of that money on advertising trying to convince you to buy their furnace let them back it up with a good warranty!

I was at a Goodman dealer meeting and the Goodman territory sales manager said "Goodman is the #1 selling brand sold in America."

I just have my furnace replaced few days ago by a contractor in Hasting, and they charaged me $3600.
It's a Goodman GMV95 with 10 years of Parts and Labor warranty. After they installed it, I did some research and I think the price is a bit high. Can someone tell me if $3600 is a bit too high for a Goodman brand.

Comparing a $3600 install in Minneapolis to a $1700 install in Spencer is like comparing a tricycle made in China to an Abrams M1 Tank. They are both modes of transportation, but ...

Niether one of you give any information with regard to size of home, type of construction, was the installation to existing ductwork/piping or was there work done beyond the R&R of the base unit. What are the regulations in each state. How far away is the installing contractor from the job site, the list of qestions could go on and on. Without a lot of specifics, it is impossible to second guess prices. Either one of you, or both could have received a very good price, a fair price or you may have been screwed witout getting a kiss.

In the real world, big boys get three or four prices for a job this size. They also check references and contractor reputation through the BBB. If they reputation is good, the install went well, the contractor backs his work and is treating you honestly ... YOU agreed on the price before work started. If you didn't make some basic checks on a major purchase that will affect your comfort and your budget for years to come and you find that you got a bad deal ... consider the experience a valuable lesson brought to you by the University of Hard Knocks.

I did a whole lot of research on furnaces and have found out that what the reviewer says is correct. Goodman makes the same furnaces and markets them also with the Amana label. You can not beat the 10 year warranty on parts and lifetime on heat exchanger. Some of the other brands offer the same warranty and some have less.

I too am having my furnace replaced with a Goodman 95% GMV95. I shopped with a big outfit & was at first quoted $4000-$4500 for a furnace install and I believe they padded the costs due to a local rebate of $600 from our local gas supplier for installation of High Efficiency furnaces plus IRS is giving a tax rebate of 30% for 2009 / 2010 installation of enegery saving HVAC unit for up to $1500 in tax credits. I went to a smaller company which doesn't advertise & only goes by word of mouth... and was quoted $2500 for the total install plus free cleaning on my central air conditioner. I will still qualify for the $600 rebate and IRS tax credit so I jumped on this deal. It pays to shop around.

can someone please help me with an unbiased opinion? i need to replace my furnace and central air. i'm either doing a goodman system or a trane system. the trane is $850 more. both have the same warranty except the goodman replaces the entire furnace if the heat exchanger dies within the first 10 years. i will be running the motor 24/7, so i want the furnace and central air to be very quiet. i'm getting a 95% with a 13 seer a/c. please help me because i don't know if the trane is worth the $850 more. thx! p.s. i am in northeast ohio.

I had the Amana dealer here tuesday night and he gave us a price of $4540.00 for a gmv95 furnace with a 14 seer amana a/c unit, Sears was here wednesday night and gave us a price of $ 6873.00 for a Kenmore system, and a 13 seer a/c unit. he told us that he has replaced some Amana units that were only 6-7 years old, and he wouldnt buy one, hmmmm, i think he is a major BS er.........I called the Amana dealer and they are going to install the gmv95 in a few weeks! we live in SE MN

I bought a new Amana AMV9 furnace 5 years ago. It has never worked properly. The contractor cannot fix it, and the manufacturer will not accept responsibility.
