Well, I don't know if it still like this or not but it used to be that the fire dept. had more members who liked to hang out at the dept. if they where on call. When I worked at the resque squad (NOT as a member) they had one person at the squad to answer calls for emergency who would then call the members on duty at their home or whereever they may be (this was before everyone and their grandmother had a cell phone) and when/IF the member could be reached they had to travel from whereever they where to the squad hall then get in ambulance etc. Seemed responce time from the squad hall to the scene was very good but responce time trying to get a "active" member to actually get to the hall was very lacking...like I say though, this was many years ago and may not be applicable to answer your question today.

Now they have paid members that are suppose to have at lease 2 there at all times, but if they are on another call it would still be awhile before anyone else could get there. I think, unless it has change a lot they do a good job.

the squad is a good organization it is just lacking members, the main reason they have an extended response time

We need a dedicated firehouse with sleeping quarters and paid firemen with medic training on call 24 hrs. a day,7 days a week.Same with rescue calls minus sleeping quarters. Now,if that occured response times would get better but folks would scream bloody murder when tax rates went up. Hats off to all you dedicated fire and rescue personel.Your appreciated.

First of all, there are only two people a night on call. Until recently, one night was assigned to just one person. If the on call crew is out on a call and another one goes off; the dispatch has to call for additional members. Maybe if there were more people in the community that would volunteer and put in an application and take a class; then there would be more people to make it to a call faster. Sometimes it's hard when there's not that many people on call a night. The fire department on the other hand probably has more people that come out on calls. There's not a certain number for them; they come out in groups. There are less than 20 people on the rescue squad. Maybe the town of Saltville needs to step up and take some classes to be an EMT. Then there would be more people to answer the calls. Thank you.

Take 1 class to be a paramedic? To be a paramedic there are 4 levels which require a minimum of over a year to 2 years training depending on state. I sure hope we have some level 4 paramedics here in saltville. No wonder theres a funeral here everyday.

No I didn't say it was one class. I said people could put in an application and take a class; then take classes to be an EMT. CLASSES is plural meaning more than one. And it's not the rescues fault that there are funerals. People die of old age or bad health or any other natural causes. But seriously, if everyone wants to talk about how long it takes for the rescue; then maybe people need to put in their application and start taking classes.

if you want to talk about response time,if you had members that live in saltville instead of chilhowie they would be able to answer call faster.maybe you all should listen the scanner a little bit bit more and you all would see how many times thier alert are set off. for example fire dept has been on top of things its very rare for them to have alerts set off twice to get a responce.and i know the fire dept helps everytime the rescue squad needs them. the people in town should be glad for the new fire dept. it has come a long ways and now everyone should be proud of the memebers they have now.

No because it's none of their business who is paid and who isn't. The main thing is that they are helping the community the best way they can. Everyone should be thankful that the town even has a rescue and fire department. And yes you have to put in an application and it has to be approved before you become a member. It shouldn't matter if they are paid members or volunteer; as long as they do their job, y'all should be happy.

What does this have to do with the fire dept. Don't try to being them down with you.Did you know that they have to pay people to run call on sunday cause no one wants to do it. They have 2 guys that run calls all weekend from 6 sat. night till 6 sunday night. Oh 6 out of the 13 members are paid. Sounds like they are out for something besides the community?
