Maryland State Police announced yesterday that the August death of former Friendsville resident Derek R. Bittinger, 36, has been ruled a homicide by the Maryland State Medical Examiner's Office.

No arrests have yet been made in the case, which remains under investigation by MSP. Investigation has led police to believe that Bittinger may have been pushed into the river, but then left and re-entered the river on his own.

Police are continuing to interview and reinterview various people as part of the investigation.

Excuse me but the information you are calling old news well let me tell you something that was my brother and it is not old news it will never be old news.Friendsville has turned into such a shitty town. well i wouldnt say the whole town is shitty because theyre are some really good people who live down there.

On August 6,2008 my olest brother Derek Ray Bittinger had his life taken. He was just 36 years old and has 3 beautiful children, Zachary, Lucy and Lily all under the age of 10. We all miss him dearly but we know in our hearts that Derek is in a better place watching over all of us. Its so hard to believe that hes really gone. The sad thing is there was 8 to 15 people that stood around and watched him die and not a one of them called for help until 13 hour later. There are some sick people in this world and how they live with themselves i have not a clue. It makes me so angry for anybody who has ever lost someone the way we lost Deek.

i just want to say to chelsey my heart goes out to you i keep your family in my prayers and it apaulds me to know i grew up there and that such ignorance and hate can come over people enough to take a life and to take a father away from his children, i just found this out last week and derek and i just started talking on myspace back last may and i messaged him wanting to know why i havent heard from him and then i heard this, honey i am soo sorry..hold your head high and know the people that did this will bust hell wide open karma is a bitch. if you ever need someone to talk to holla at me im on his page...shannon is my name..shannon arblaster siggers

It seems to me that the justice system in your area needs to be checked into, in our state those people would have been held responsible just because they with held info that may have saved him, If I were his parents I would not let this rest until the truth comes out and believe me pressure will make people talk, my prayers are with your family linda in england email me please

my son wants to go to ride the rapids in friendsville md, but i will not give my permission for him to go because until they figure out what happened to that camper, i do not trust that he will be safe there, according to the papers i have read there have been no arrests made and that believe me will hurt the tourism for them. who are those people that were camping with him, were they in on it also.

those people camping are also guilty in my mind because they did nothing to help him. i am sorry that you feel the way you do about letting your son go river riding but i can not blame you, you want to feel that he would be safe if he spent time in that town, you can not blame the people that live there other than the ones involved there are good people in friendsville md also. It is the bad ones that is hurting the towns tourism.

I have been to the town of friendsville md and I have rode the rapids there, It is a nice little town and their moto is friendsville is the friendlest little town in america, I agree everyone there went out of their way to accomodate us, Now I have to say this tho, I also met some shady characters walking around town, So gies if you want to keep us coming back you have to keep those people that I met from making others feel intimadated. very shady characters. also one more thing I want to say how sorry I am for the family of the camper that died camping up that river.

It is a shame that the whole town of friendsville is being labeld as being a bad town when the people that commited this crime are the ones that are making the rest of the town look real bad, ever town has its bad apples and maybe after those responsible are punished the town of friendsvill md can get its reputation back as being a nice small town. hope so because we liked the rapids there.

Friendsville is a beautiful town. Like the wv kyakers said the people who committed this crime are the bad apples, i grew up there and have moved back to the outskirts recently. i don't go there much anymore because i don't know many there but as far back as I am able to remember there were always people who held a reputation for raising cane but this situtation is different because whoever is resbonsible for Derek's death is still wondering the streets there. It makes you wonder how long it will take until this type of thing happens again. Friendsville changes so much from year to year the only thing i can say is go there, enjoy the beauty and the rapids and hope another wind of change has swept through again!

No matter who says what, until the people of that town stand up and take responsibiliy, nothing will change. people will think that they are hiding something and it will reflect on one and all, someone in that town knows what happened that night and If they do not come forth and tell. god will be their judge and the hell they will suffer from him will be worse than any here on earth, so do they want his forgiveness now or wait, my advice is to tell, you know who you are and so does he.
