The Mansion originally built by Thomas Weston and his wife Elizabeth Dawes Weston. A picture was taken around 1869-1870. Then sold to Charles Babcock and was remodeled when the Weston family moved further north. Mr. Babcock's father, J.W. Babcock, was an Assemblyman in 1889 and married Eva Fuller on Jan.1st,1893. Their adopted children were Jim and Virginia. In 1920's,a baby grand piano was purchased as a gift for Eva and was intended for the parlor. A piano teacher, Mrs. Raymond Bernard, took care of the house while the Babcocks were on vacation. Ruth Fry's family wound up buying the Chickering piano for $200.00. Ruth herself took lessons from Mrs. Bernard on this piano! Ruth said there is a huge staircase and fireplace in the parlor (just off the front door). The parlor furniture was upholstered in pink velvet. The piano stood by the bay window in the front of the house. The dining room was decorated in Wedgewood blue and white. The piano was given to Camp McCoy when it could no longer be tuned. The legs had to be removed to take it out of the house and (it was heard)it was dropped! At some point, this house was used as a home for nuns. Later on, Jake Joslin and his wife owned the house and used it as an antique store. His wife, Darlene, is the one who made sure the mansion had "Historical" site qualification. They used part of the house for a museum. A man from Canada owned it for some time. The Sacred Heart Convent lasted for several years. At this time, as Ruth remembers, the chapel was added to the north side. The story is, the last owner purchased it to be a B&B but access for the driveway off 5th street was not convenient. I do remember, as a teenager, nuns took care of the property but haven't seen anyone there in years. My family from Illinois had a tour a couple years back. The current owners are from Illinois and do not wish to sell the property. I had heard it is for religious reasons but have no proof of this. I have never seen anything "haunted" about it. I do walk my dog past at night and no movement or people in windows! Sorry to disappoint! I just wish the owners would consider fixing it up and allowing tours so the rest of the population could enjoy it!! It is historical and should be appreciated!! That's all for now! If I can figure out how to get pics on here....I do have a copy of the original house and the restored pic too!
Thanks for your time!
U Tina I would love to talk to you about nuns living here and if so would this have been in 1941? Please contact me at [email protected] thank you so much

I have been driving pasted this house for 30 years from Madison to Marshfield. I fell in love with this house and always said I would love to live in it. I love old historical home. I have noticed that this last summer that work has been done on the house, new roof and some painting. Can anyone tell me if the house has sold or is there a chance the house is being restore for tours.

I work with a lady who has told me stories of this house. We just went swimming tonight at her daughters work a block from the house and I asked my friend if we could go check it out. Just parked across the street and walked up the sidewalk. I was 20 feet from the door and couldn't go any further. I felt a tension and coldness and the house was watching us. I have two crappy pictures and the first one you can see what appears to be a thin streak on the left side when you zoom in it looks like someone ran their nail across a Polaroid and scratched it. The second is normal and more clear for some reason. I'm an avid believer in the paranormal and find it fascinating. You have to be open minded to truly appreciate that there are things beyond our comprehension that do exist and don't have to answer to anyone! So I don't need to go inside for closure know one can understand how I feel or felt 20 feet for the front door and I don't need to convince anyone just thought it would be fun to share!

Well I'm convinced. Too many different people have said the same thing as you, so it must be so. But sadly it seems like there are those who don't want others to know about it. I wonder what's up with that?

There are people who are repainting the mansion. They started last year, but one of the guys that started it got cancer and is currently recovering from it. I don't know if they are going to start again soon. For the people who said they got tours, but people wouldn't show them the basement or the top floor I don't feel comfortable telling you, but go to the white house that is right next to the mansion and the owner can tell you some things about it especially about the basement part cause they know the reason. I don't think the mansion is haunted. I grew up in Necedah and I go pass St. Michael's everyday. Back in the day there used to be another mansion right across St. Michael's too. If you find a map of Necedah that was from the 1830s-1880s you can see that St. Michaels has a lot of land. The Mansion does not even look scary at night, I went passed it tonight and it wasn't scary it was the same as daytime. Necedah also should get the owners to do tours of the house blc they would make millions! My mother and I were talking about the mansion tonight and she told me that there were slaves that would clean and take care of the place. St. Michael's is made out of bricks, but there is wood that cover the bricks. I'm not sure if there's still bricks there though.

The home was definitely care for by servants and/or slaves. There is a formal staircase used by the family and their guests that is beautiful polished wood with carved rails and banisters leading to the massive family's bedrooms on the upper level. One complete wall is shelves and cupboards as this appears to have been how clothing was stored before closets in the master bedroom. Shockingly, the white and black tiled bathroom is as large as most living rooms! Then, there is "servant/slaves" stairs and quarters, a mere narrow staircase, L-shaped, leading to cramped upper quarters of about 4 small rooms and one shared bath which interestingly enough was indoor plumbing with a tub having clawed feet.

The attic was through a trapdoor and very cluttered and cramped with memorabilia from years of memories, including many photos and albums of the family. I took those with me but all the rest remained.

The basement was oppressive, mostly due to the bleak, black dingy unlit areas. There was a dark room where the coal chute was and immense boilers that appeared frightening. Of the entire home, the basement was where I felt most uncomfortable.

For those who don't know, I am the Canadian owner's daughter in law.

Its not Haunted, they say it is to keep you away... in fact there are underground tunnels thorugh out the town that all led to the mansions basment, where a group of the towns well known people gather and do satanic rituals..

The village administrator was very clear on the fact that the owners didn't want to sell because the house was sentimental in value to them. Meaning, it wasn't due to ghosts, it was due to the fact that the house was an important piece in their family's history. My family is actually tied to the house. My father-in-law's family actually took in Mrs. Babcock after Mr. Babcock passed. We actually have items from the house passed down thru the generations. We, as a family, would have heard of any hauntings or apparitions pertaining to the house. We all still live in Necedah where the house is located. Most "gossip" about the house is passed mostly thru school-aged children who walk past it on the way to school. I did hear of the possible bed and breakfast but the reason it fell thru was due to the possible buyers presuming that the sale would happen. When they offered an outrageous amount, they were surprised that they were turned down! It just is not for sale. As far as some of the people who have "experienced" a menacing feeling while sittin on the porch...let's put it this way...anytime you put yourself in a place where the idea of a ghost exists..you scare the crap out of yourself, not the ghosts' presence. We all like to be intrigued some times.
There are tunnels underground that all led to that house, tunnels from the necedah bank, the old libary, houses on the hill, the old school, the hardware store, and many other stores on main street, they dont want to sell because thats where they met and do satantic rituals,,, someone needs to burn that building down, and all the people involed with the satanic rituals should also be burnt as well,,.,, this is the truth,

I live in Necedah also, and I go past that mansion every day, heck i've even walked up to it and looked inside, haunted I think NOT. IT's an awesome building though, if they did do tours I bet they would make a good share a $Cash$ I would definitely like a tour. I can't belive they are just letting it sit there, no one even maintains it
I really miss you since 1970 the house that is haunted is not the big white one is a house next to the veterans home on the hill look at the real estate you see all kinds of orbs in the pictures specially around the garage in the back hallways I've heard many stories about the cells from different people that live there and in the past years
