The town is hoping to get its hands on funds from a state grant program that could let it repave at least some of Route 116.

Rte 116 in Plainfield was just as bad near Plainfield Pond. Their road crew at least patched the larger potholes with dense grade material to soften the blow. Savoy has done nothing but whine. Cars and trucks are weaving through both travel lanes at 20-30 mph, not that I blame them, trying to avoid these craters.
Why is it that Rte 7-20 gets overhauled every 5 or so years in front of District 1 in Lenox when there is nothing wrong with that road yet Rte 116 can't seem to get any help from Mass Highway. Mass Highway should again take over the road and once again repave it. To everyone in the Lenox office, take a ride up there and see for yourself.

This road is absolutely TERRIBLE. I was with my fiance lastnight on his motorcycle and I couldn't believe the size of the potholes that would have swallowed the whole bike! Thank God they are repaving it before someone really gets hurt!

There is no excuse for Savoy to not at least patch it for the time being. I guess when someone seriously gets hurt then maybe the Savoy DPW will get off there butts and do something.

Tourists and motorcyclists beware! I can't imagine what this will (or won't) do for tourism. Also, the road is so bad, the fall run may have to be re-routed if no repairs of any kind are made. I hope a resolution comes quickly for everyone's sake.

I totally agree 'fed up'. When will they see this road is a disaster and a death trap. I myself hope they fix it before the Fall Run, because I can only imagine how we are going to dodge 3 foot deep potholes side by side on motorcycles. God Bless whoever takes that road!

My wife and I travel that road 7 days a week- its down right deplorable. BUT lay the blame where it belongs and thats not with the 3 man crew of the highway department. The so-called selectmen are the bosses, remember when they told the people of Savoy they didnt have a say in the fire cheif? Well they are basically saying the same thing about the roads. MAYBE THEY SHOULD PONY UP THERE SALARY TO HELP "PAVE THE WAY". If they can't do their job they aint worth jack.

I live in the town of Savoy, and I travel the road everyday. I agree that it is terrible. But maybe the state should repave the road since realistically it is a state highway. I don't feel that the fault lies with the DPW or the Selectmen. The DPW bust thier butts all winter to maintain the roads. People need to realize that Savoy is not a big time town or city. We are a small town, with small town money.

Since Savoy has decided to prostitute the berkshires natural beauty by trashing the landscape with visual pollution for small change, they should just ask mineutman wind to fix it. In fact as soon the checks are cashed, legislation should be filed to prohibit all state aid to go to Savoy or any other community that reaps energy profit windfalls. These projects are allready heavily subsidized. It is time to wake up. Why should other communities have to pay anybody that crawls into bed with these giant multi-national energy companies, and creates ugly visual blight for profit. Why fix the road when no one will want to go there?
Welcome to the future.

I commute back and forth to work on this road for work, and it's condition is absolutely ridiculous. I too have had popped tires and broken wheel bearings as a result of the unavoidable holes, and am fed up.

As for tourism, I stay as far away from 116 on weekends as possible, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. This can't be good for places like Mass MoCA and the Clark Art Institute.

I can't imagine having to endure this commute for much longer.

My guess would be that the selectmen to do commute to work over rt 116 or it would have been patch already!

You have it nailed! Rte. 116 is a state highway.
The road fuels tax is to pay for just such things. Savoy residents should demand that the money be spent as intended.

I know for a fact that one of the selectmen has to commute over it everyday. Almost everyone in town has to. If you want to go down in to the town of adams, pretty much Rt 116 is the only way to go.

I understand that many people are in opposition to the windmill projects, but the project is only in the beginning stage, it would be years before anything is even done. Rt 116 needs help now.

another nice day and another nice day without 1 pothole being repaired-get off the stick, and I AM saving all my repair bills for front end damage and repair of the tires- hmmmm wonder how much this will cost the village due to the selectmen sitting on their thumbs. Just noticed tyown meeting will be the 14th- maybe a good time to bring my repair bills and see what they say...any guesses? a sign being hap-hazardly put up does not cover them legally.

For everyone's information, The DPW budget is at zero right now. At the town meeting being held on the 14th, money will be requested from atablilzation for the town to patch 116. Providing that is approved, patching will be DPW's first priority. A special town meeting could have been called for but with the required posting and advertising time it would have been only a week earlier. hope was that the state would step in before then and patch the road before then but it did'nt happen. I know the road is in deplorable condition, I drive it every day and at times take Center Rd. and East Hoosac St. to Adams to avoid it. The truth is, the town is in bad financial shape and can no longer take the expense of route 116. Maby if the state paid us a fair tax rate on all of the land they own in town we wouldnt be in the shape were in.

The state is bankrupt. So is the country.
The Guv wants to build casinos, the Rep wants to build windmills, and the Republicans want to eliminate the gas tax. All the voters care about is Baseball, Dancing wih the stars, Football, American Idol, and NASCAR. Politics is no longer about policy. It is just another form of entertainment

I'd bet if a group of concerned CPA's were to examine the state and municipal CAFR's (Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports) the extent of the real assets would become very apparent. The annual reports presented for public consumption are just eyewash and reflect only budgetary stuff. The REAL accumulated assets they ALL possess are hidden in the book keeping. Do a google on CAFR's and discover the truth.

Politics has become "entertainment" because we, the people, have allowed it to happen. Instead of allowing the vacuous clowns presented to us a candidates to stand, it is up to us to become involved and present those of substance.

But when all the voter cares about is what you refer to (you omitted beer/booze/drugs, the latest sex object and pizza) then the result is what we now have.

OHHH what the selectmen have just become aware of the problem? That roads been disaserous for the last 5 months. They knew it was bad and instead of going for a loan to fix it they chose to do nothing. I dont want to hear the crap they were waiting for the state, they were sitting on there hands is the bottom line, it's a major thoroughfare and should be maintained as such not some horse path.
