This is the most useless article I ahve ever read!

Where is the link to all the town rankings?

I guess if you live in the 5 communities listed you have some of the information you need to fully evaluate your school system!

Another in-depth lowell sun piece of journalism!!

yup, they are getting a great education, this is one taxpayer thrilled to pay twice as much to send students there for less than half of the education...Oh and what percent of their students even take the test? Bet it is less than 30 % and still the bottom of the bunch.. My kid is out of there!

Its the illegals in the Lowell schools that are dragging the system down. The surronding towns dont have this problem. We weed them out.

you cannot compare apples and oranges. acton-boxborough and westford are not comparable to lowell. anyone can take the SATs. some inner city kids sign up for them who do not take the college prep courses or understand the college application process. compare westford and AB to other dual county schools and see where they rank. they look good next to a city school but not so great next to their equals.

The whole Merrimack Valley is a pathetic idiot festival. However, if you have traveled, you have learned this already.( That's right-I said it.) Any questions? Ask a book.

BALONEY!- YOU MUST BE ONE OF THOSE FLUNKY ADMINISTRATORS OR FLUNKY TEACHERS IN LOWELL OR SIMILAR SCHOOL SYSTEM.- Most of those inept and lazy teachers and administrators also happen to be racists!

Oh Boy, I guess all those parents who thought that Shawsheen, Nashoba and Greater Loser Tech were great academic institutions and sent their kids there are shocked now. Check the SAT scores. Hey at least they know how to cut hair, bang nails or turn a wrench.

This is like comparing the crime rates of Acton and Westford with Lowell and saying that the police in those towns must be doing a far superior job to Lowell. There are many factors that go into SAT scores not the least of which is socio-economics.
Calling someone racist is a pretty serious charge, I would hope you could substantiate those charges.

I agree, This is the largest waste of money in our public education system. We pay twice as much for an education that is a joke. A very small percent of these kids ever go to college or take employment in their shop of choice. I say why pay all that money for nothing. Why dont we send them to a regular High School where at least they could learn how to read or write? Evident by the SAT scores.

Your analogy is very poor. Police departments interact with members of its population mostly when there is a problem of public safety while school departments interact with its students for long periods of time for about two hundred and fifty days of the year whatever the exact number is.

Police departments are basically reactionary in their function while school departments are primarily proactive in their function, and the problem with school departments is greatly related to ineffectiveness in their proactive function.

You are very confused,
The administration in UTL (United Teachers of Lowell) and a significant percentage of the teachers in Lowell are racists. Of course, a significant percentage are also lazy and inept. There are among teachers some very dedicated and competent teachers, but that is a minority.

Unfortunately it is not the excelling students who typically become teachers but typically the mediocre high school student who had not acquired good study habits then, who most probably still did not acquire them in college, and who most likely will not acquire them UNLESS THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION DEMONSTRATES THAT IT IS READY TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR WORK PRODUCT: THE PERFORMANCE OF THE STUDENTS UNDER THEIR CARE, AND THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION (thanks greatly to UTL) IS NOT COMMITTED TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. POLITICS AND SPECIFICALLY CORRUPT POLITICS IS STILL ITS CURRENCY!

We hear all the time about how the US ranks 21st in Math and 23rd in Science out of the top 25 industrialized countries. Well, there was an interesting analysis done which took the results and adjusted them for a few things. First, it removed all the students who were in the school where English was not their primary language (probably means children of illegal immigrants). Next I believe they took out hispancs and african americans. Guess what, the US rose in ranking to be in the top 5 in each category.

Right on, dude. All the next posts are all "blah- blah our national ranking....." or " boo hoo political football, etc. " I mean we are from here( the land shining on theSun) or still are here and I have to ask, do the people around you seem terribly smart? If so, do you know enough smart people to execute some social policy effectively or is it usually the aforementioned " festival of idiocy" that
unfolds?
Civilization relies on treating people who are strangers in unknown parts of their own country, or even the world, as familiar and worthy of respect and courtesy. That is a tall order for the Mill City and towns like it for reasons too heartbreaking to dwell on. It's enough to say that tests and statistics count for very little in place choking on it's own fear and loathing.
