There is kind of a dilemma here. If Ricky gets a death sentence, he gets to live protected in a cell 23 hours a day, with an hour for exercise, always protected from other inmates. If he gets a life sentence, the “other death sentence,” he gets to live in general population marked as one of the most despicable of inmates in any facility. He’ll probably need to be placed in protective custody under the same conditions as death row until his case is obscured by many years. Either way, he’ll have a miserable life.
The “half wit defense” didn’t work for Melvin Knight and now Ricky’s taking a shot at it. They are both truly half wits who inflicted a cruel killing on a helpless victim, Jennifer Daugherty. What’s best for Ricky…the death sentence or the “other death sentence?”
