The sub head doesn't make clear to outsiders where this region is, but is there a region in the US you cannot say this of?

The article is clearly about New York. But it is a poorly written article. And to say that Fire Island is "pigeonholed as an exclusive gay" is ridiculous. Fire Island is physically a long island (not to be confused with Long Island on the other side of Great South Bay) and has many communities that are very diverse.

Fire Island is more than 30 miles long, Robert Moses State Park is located on Fire Island, and some of the many communites on Fire Island are: Fair Harbor, Kismet, Lonelyville, Ocean Beach, Saltaire, Seaview, Cherry Grove, Davis Park, Fire Island Pines, Oakleyville, Point O'Woods, Ocean Bay Park, Smith Point County Park, Sunken Forest, Talisman, Watch Hill, and Water Island.

And while Cherry Grove and The Pines are largely gay, to say that Fire Island is "exclusively gay" is untrue and shows an incredible ignorance of Fire Island.

(I used to party in Cherry Grove on the weekends for many years).

A very poorly written article.
