They have begun constructing something at the new Lowes-on the left. Does anyone know what it is? It is not in the location of the new Dairy Queen. I"m hoping its a new restaurant and hopefully something Abingdon doesn't already have.

We certainly could use something different out at exit 19 restaurant wise. I hope it isn't a Dairy Queen though.

Here's praying for a Captain D's, Popeye's Chicken, or an A&W restaurant.

I asked a Lady Saturday at Lowes and she told me that it was a parking lot for Lowes employees. That doesn't sound right either.

Check out Washington County GIS.
If it's on Lowe's property, a parking lot may be possible. The adjoining property is owned by Johnson Falcon LLC out of Florida. And according to the site, the land is Zoned B2-Business/General.

I just drove down there. The work being done is not on Lowes property. So, no parking lot.
The lot that the equipment is on right now is not owned by Wallmart either. Plus the lot is less than 6 acres, less than half the size of Lowes' lot, which is 13.5 acres. So...I really doubt a Wallmart is going there.

The new Dairy Queen is going to be between the Shell Station and the Bank. There is not enough available land at Exit 19 for Wal-Mart and yes they are still going for Exit 14. The added benefit of them going to Exit 14 is the work they are willing to do to the exit there. This will be needed for the "New Southwest Virginia Artisan Center Heartwood" that is being built just across the interstate from where the new Wal-Mart will be located. Let's git her done.

Wal-Mart has been in negotiation with land owners behing Highlands Animal Hospital. If you notice there is a red light there that currently lead to NO WHERE. They have not purchase the land yet but there is not enough room on the side of the road where Lowes is located.

The only thing I've seen at Exit 19 is the sign for the Dairy Queen Grill and Chill or something. Don't know about a WalMart but if it would make them fix the ramp at Exit 14, I'd be all for it! I hate that ramp, it's too dangerous!

Oh yes, by all means, let's just invite Walmart in with open arms so that our little town can become another exit 7. That's what we all need right? Can't drive 12 miles down the road and let Bristol keep all that traffic and mass produced crap. That is what is wrong with America today. Nobody cares about "community quality" anymore. Instead, all we (meaning, a collective, we, as Americans) care about is what is most convenient to us. Soon enough, there will be Walmarts and Lowes and fast food joints on every street corner, in every community, and then where will we be? Oh, that's right...the city of "Screwed"...populati on: everyone!

If you would look at a plat of the land behind Highlands Animal Hospital you will find that there are several owners involved and you will also see that a right of way for a street is already layed out, so the red light there is not only for Lowe's, but to take care of this street when it is developed. The street goes straight in and curves to the right behind the Highlands Animal Hospital. Look at the dimensions of the property and you will realize that there is not enough room to put a Wal-Mart there. Now look at the Exit 14 site and you will find it is perfect.

exit 14 doesnt have room for anything with its little 2 lane road. We'll have an even worse than exit 17 bottle neck traffic jam all the time. Years ago they wouldnt widen the road cause of the underpass and now try driving in that mess during what we call lunch or quitting time.
Sorry to disappoint those of you who like to drive 10 miles for everything. We need to have a store that actually employs check out clerks etc unlike Kmart in this town.

The best I remember the road under the interstate at Exit 14 is four lanes, nothing on the side of the north bound lane to prevent them from making it four lanes well past where the Wal-Mart site is. The developer has offered to fix the problem with the exit at 14 and could be done without a lot of disruption of traffic, all they would have to do it shut down the on and off ramp on the north bound side of 81, build new ramps like they should have been to start with and they will be in business.

Build the Wmart at 24 or 29? Then there wouldn't be two just seven miles apart, or a void between abingdon and marion for the walmart addicks.

I've heard Olive Garden is going in there, but they were supposed to be going in the exit 5 area.

It is this type of mentality... the refusal to change, which drags Abingdon down. America is not the same as it used to be 50 years ago. While some people want to protect the "historic treasure" that is Abingdon, you must realize that the town must change with the country... or be left behind. Being left behind carries a much worse fate!
