Coal: According to recent statistics, coal is the worst performer so far in 2012. The Market Vectors Coal ETF (KOL), which tracks the Stowe Coal Index of leading coal producers in the United States and also globally, is down approximately 28% year-to-date. The Dow Jones U.S. Coal Index is down closer to 40% and illustrates the extent to which coal has fallen out of favor. The U.S. Energy Information Administration attributes the decline to lower demand, which stems directly from the drop in natural gas prices (see below for further details). Now that gas is more affordable, coal as an alternative energy source is much less attractive. A slowdown in China is seen as the main reason global coal demand is down.

The main reason for lower coal consumption this year is lower natural gas prices leading to coal power generation switching to gas.

Blame the natural gas industry or the fact that China's economy is slowing to a standstill.

We have so many energy resources in America we could be energy indapendent. But obama and his epa and the seirra club want to outlaw coal and now they are going after natural gas. Isnt oil a carbon fuel? But all of the coal haters and obama get a lot of funding from bug oil companies. Didnt bp donate a huge sum to the obama campaign? We dont here much complaining about foreign oil from these folks. I have been boycotting any buisness supporting obama.

Any of you smug Tri-Cities (and Abingdon, Emory, etc.) residents who don't believe that yesterday's devastating news from Alpha Natural Resources will not or does not affect you or your life style had better think again. You are part of this picture and need to wake up and reevaluate your uneducated, uninformed attitudes with regard to this topic.
Coal supports this entire region, either directly or indirectly.(Those of you who have benefitted greatly by the $$$ donations to your causes, charities, campaigns, etc. will notice if for no other reason, sadly.)
Mining, while evidently "looked down upon" by many of you, has come a long way in past years. No, it is not yet perfected, but changes in technology and science have gradually enhanced and improved many areas. The Supreme Court recently ruled that the EPA had over-extended its authority with regard to this industry, but today it's difficult to care about the over-reaching EPA regulations when we are worried about supporting our families! People are out of work, and folks, we too, along with our families, friends and neighbors, are subject to starvation!
I too am concerned about global warming, but get real - coal does not deserve all the blame. If you are opposed to living in an area that is so close to coal operations, then I suggest you already have a remedy at your disposal:- it's called RELOCATION! Just move! Go someplace else and find something new and original to complain about! At least for the moment we are still a democracy, a free country offering a system of free enterprise to those who are willing to work toward achieving their goals, but hurry!!!....it might not last long!!! Let each of us examine our priorities, face reality and think carefully before adding ignorant nonsense to these sites.
Funny you should mention the donations. I happened to have listened to a sports show on radio last week and they qouted Mr. Donnie Ratliff of ANR who wanted all the listening audience and sports fans to be assured that ANR WOULD continue their support of local athletics and other beneficial charitable organizations during this economic downturn. Wow, I guess that the AT Massey debacle didn't totally wipe out the coffers, just the part that would have payed the wages of the poor hardworking miners they HAD to let go last week.

"ignorant nonsense",,,,,,,,I think not. People have a right to question the motives of ANR, Consol and these other major coal producers that are in bed with the Koch brothers and the so-called "Friends of Coal". You are exactly right on track. This is a democracy. People have a right to inhabit the homes of their fathers and grandfathers and should NOT be told to relocate because of corporate abuse. As a resident of the coalfields for nearly 60 years, I've got a message for you,,,,,,,,YOU MOVE,,,,,this is my home.

Voters need to wake up and realize that a major game is being played out here, on the backs of coal miners, I'm afraid. Call this what it is. It's not an attack on coal. This an attack on anyone who doesn't want to follow the right-wing political agenda of the Koch-Rove bandwagon. Remember they pledged $400,000.00 of their own money to get their man elected. Do you think they care to sacrifice a few coal miners jobs?

Th epa created by obama is what destroyed the steam coal market. We need coal fired electricity for manufacturing airconditioning and to charge the smart cars with. Why buy an electric car when there will not be enough electicity to charge it. Obama supporters are so uninformed they are destroying the things that make this country great.

Talk about uninformed! Although he gets blamed for almost everything else that's contraversial in this country, according to the right wing, President Obama didn't create the EPA. Actually, you need to go back to Nixon for that. And, by the way, the EPA is a good thing. Come over to the coal counties and see some unregulated work done by coal companies in the past. We want to live here. Mining, shipping and burning of coal must be supervised.

I was born and raised here in the coal fields which is also were I work for now untill obama finishes us off.I Will never leave until the day I die and go home to a better place. Obama is destroyiong what is left of this great nation.

Oh, I'm sorry. I can see why I was confused. I thought you said Obama created the EPA. You actually said, the EPA created by Obama. Funny.

The TVA just opened a power plant in Hawkins Co., TN. They built the natural gas power plant right beside their coal burning power plant. Why? Because it was cheaper to build a new plant that ran on natural gas (which is cheaper to than coal) than to operate the coal fired plant.

You Republicans can't see the forest for the trees. Boucher did everything to keep coal as a useful source of energy. You guys want coal to be the main source as it once was but it will never be king again. You are going to lose the fight and since you don't have anyone in the Congress that understands this the coal industry may be lost forever.

It's the Koch Bros. vs. T. Boone Pickens. Mega Rich vs. Mega Rich. They both give huge money to buy congressional districts and opinions in Washington. Natural gas is killing coal!

The front page of the Kingsport Times News has an article about the new power plant in Hawkins County and Phil Roe is praising the state of the art plant made possible by cheap natural gas. Then he realized that his moderate slip was showing and he added, but the EPA is killing coal. Natural gas is cheap and everyone wants to switch then guess what, it won't be so cheap. Then the oil and gas companies will laugh their little tails off all the way to the bank.

Are you saying that the corporations that control oil and gas dictate the price because of supply and demand? I thought Fox News said all we had to do was drill, baby drill every inch of public land and our oil and gas would be almost free. I can't believe that if we produce all of our own oil and gas that the price would be cheaper than the same as on the world market. How are the American oil and gas companies going to make billions of dollars in profit every 3 mos. if they sell it cheaper in the United States?

Don't worry coal, in another 50 years or so someone may actually find a way to use coal again. Or if you clench it between your butt cheeks it might turn into diamonds.

There are many more facts to consider. I have nothing against coal miners, but you should think about the big picture. Coal companies get billions in tax handouts every year. They also lay people off constantly, and the industry is set to ship huge amounts of coal to China. What about all the jobs and lives the coal industry destroys? They blow entire mountains away, pollute our world, and refuse to even use scrubbers or cover their toxic heaps or ash ponds. How can you not care about the mercury, lead, arsenic and other poisons they pump into the air every year? The lead and mercury end up in our food, and in our children. Look for yourself, at the amounts of lead and mercury pumped into the air and water by each coal plant every year. And it not only poisons the region, it poisons the whole world. You can barely even catch a fish anymore thats not full of mercury. You seriously want to allow them to continue poisoning our land, contaminating our food and water, blowing our mountains away? Clean coal is a total scam. If coal is clean, why the hell does all that poison come out of the coal plants? It costs our society billions in healthcare costs every year. Harvard medical school published a study accounting for the full cost of coal over its life cycle. Why don't you read it. How many communities have coal companies came through, blew up the mountains, polluted the air and water, left their toxic ash ponds, the layed off the workers and moved on to the next place to destroy. They won't even cover their coal rail cars, and each one can lose over 500 lbs of coal dust on a few hundred mile trip, and we all have to breathe it in so they can make more money. I will boycott any company that funds the destruction of our air, land and water. It blows my mind that so many people support corporations and political candidates that don't care about them at all. You fall for their propaganda, while even youur kids probably have mercury in their blood, and the mountains you fish and hunt in are contaminated, and you really think for a second that if it would increase their profit, they would not get rid of your job and send it to China? If coal is clean, show me the evidence. Explain how coal pumps 50 tons of mercury into our air every year. Why should they get billions in tax handouts every year? What a load of BS
