According to the U.S. Post Office website, damaging a mailbox is also a federal crime since mailboxes are federal property. That means the penalty goes up to $250,000 or up to three years in prison for each act.

I care. I get from 2 to 15+ mailboxes destroyed per year. I would love to see harsh action taken on those that take enjoyment from this. If nothing else make them come out and replace the box. It is a hassle to call the post office and have them stop your mail, replace the box, and then call and restart your mail. The cheapest mailbox you can buy now is almost 10.00. I would love to have a nice mailbox, but I can only put in the cheap ones because they only last a few months.

put some bricks in your mailbox. Whatever kid shows up at school on Monday with a broken arm is your smasher.

Somebody does care. Apparently you have never had property destroyed by some idiot with nothing better to do. The imbicels who are out destroying the property of others are the ones who need to get a life.

I hope they catch them What needs to happen to the culprits when they are caught is they need to be put to work replacing each and every mail box they destroyed, and while doing this they need to wear a big sign that says, "I am a vandal."

None of this is true.

You need to get your facts straight. There is a big difference between swerving for a dog and hitting a mailbox with your vehicle, and deliberately hitting one. There wouldn’t be any charges filed for a simple accident other than maybe an agreement to replace a $10 mailbox.

Why do you want to make everyone out as a criminal!? Is this all you do, sit around and defame the community?

Go ask the postmaster, he'll be able to enlighten you on the hundreds of mailboxes smashed this year.

What's wrong with this town is theres too many "get out of jail" cards, these kids should get the full extent of punishment according to federal law. This is 2009, not 1975... Theres no excuse for people claiming to not know the severity of their actions! Set an example Abingdon, put the fear of the justice system in everyone that thinks swinging a bat at someones property is cool. Go look how sickening it looks to see everyones mailbox smashed, this is Abingdon! not the ghetto!

If this had been on Main St the kids would have been on the local news lookin at Juvee till there 18 and 3 years per count like the federal law allows.

Wake up Abingdon, tell them you're not gonna take favoritism anymore... Get your prestige back and do this one by the books,
You wanna let the kids get off on 10 hrs of community service and their daddy payin for the mailboxes then you might as well give out bats, because they'll be smashing em the next night.

One thing you could do is go to a hardware store and get a cardboard sleeve used for pouring concrete posts, pour the concrete in the sleve leaving some room on the top to place a wooden box that you can continue to fill around and over the top with concrete, you may need to put some cardboard over the front hole so you can put in an actual mail box.

There were only 2 damaged in the town and the box owners are not going to press charges in lieu of having the mailboxes replaced.

I don’t think "two" counts as numerous!

Give the kids a break, they learned their lesson.

When I was a teen, our mailbox got hit twice. My dad done the exact thing you are talking about. Then the next time they came by with their bat to bash the mailbox, they hit it and a girl screamed out and it sounded like it hurt. We happened to be outside that night on the patio and then their vehicle came barrelling down the road and they went by a little bit slower and then we heard the scream. Come to find out, it was one of my old friends that said she was drunk and didn't realize whose box she was hitting. Needless to say she was no longer a friend of mine. We got a new mailbox and she got a broken arm. My dad told her parents that she would have to pay for a new mailbox or he would press charges. So she got off pretty lucky.

This is stupid. You tell somebody to go get a P.O. box because they don't want to have to keep replacing a mailbox because of idiots vandalizing them. Let me ask you this, if someone decided to vandalize vehicles would you suggest that the victims start using public transportation.

By the way theres been several successful lawsuits where people were injured after striking fortified mailboxes, Theres even been wrongful death suits in the hundreds of thousands where people have been killed.

What if a child on a bicycle runs into your 50 lb mailbox or it comes through the windshield on someone that veers off the road by accident this winter. You people need to let it go, this is none of anybodys business anymore.
