Anybody heard why Channel 5 fired Steve Hawkins as the news director and 6 o'clock anchor?

No, but Channel 5 has the best news team in the area. I will miss seeing him, channel 5 will miss him.

It sure is strange , he has been with them since 1976 . If they put Garick Zikan on at 6pm it will be hard to watch hes hard to follow. I think Tara will be better in that time slot.

Strange that WCYB doesn't hesitate to "spread" everybody else's dirty laundry out for all to see, but they don't want to explain what happened to Steve. I thought they were a news organization and it was their duty to inform. I'll bet they would not shield anyone else from what happened.

Not necessarily. This is something they can not comment on (if he was fired) because he worked for them and it is a personnel matter. Unless there was an element of criminal activity they would not make any comment about this. If you wanta did deper, give WCYB a call and I am sure they will tell you exactly what I just did. If he was fired, I am sure he was screwed over. He's probably the best thing ever to happen to WCYB.

Very sad from what I've been told. Told him they wanted to go in a different direction and just let him go. After 30+ years. So much for loyalty.

I agree that, if this were the head of another business or organization that was let go after nearly 35 years on the job - in the public eye - the news media would be all over it, demanding to know the reasons, pulling the personnel file through the freedom of information act and publishing every last detail. And if there were no "smoking gun", they would be all over the company stiffs that did the firing, demanding an explanation, and digging up every other suspicious firing to make a story. Steve Hawkins always seemed very professional and personable, so I agree about the company not respecting loyalty. Too bad for the station and for the region. Best of luck to Steve.

I wish they would get rid of Johnny Wood. He is such a lard ass and very unprofessional. He clears his throat way too much, coughs, hacks, barks and says "Uhhhh" and "Ummm" entirely too much. Then he shakes his head and that turkey neck starts jiggling and well you get the point. Now I fully expect a hoard of followers to take to his defense, but really! Stop loving him just because your grandmother did and look at him with your own eyes and the truth will set you free.

Johnny Wood is a good reporter and a good man. You don't like his looks, then maybe people don't like your looks. You will never be the person Johnny is, too bad for you.

You are correct. Virginia is an "At-Will" employer state. An employer can fire you for any reason and not have to give you a specific reason for that decision.

Individual private corporate personnel files are not subject to thhe Freedonof Information Act, so that info would stay private. I do agree with you that it is WCYB's loss not having Steve Hawkins now. He was probably the best person ever in that position.

He should come to Bluefield WVVA. I believe he was there before he came to WCYB

Correct. But it's always been a bit of a bug to me that, the very entities that cry "Freedom of Information" hide behind the law. If this were a public agency that dismissed a 35 year employee, they would be digging at the basement door to uncover any and all scratches and dents in the person's file. Just like when the Bristol "newspaper" ran the series on government employee's salaries, but refused to release their staff payroll, or when the geniuses at Media General ran the list of every citizen in Virginia that held a concealed weapons permit "because it was their right", not caring that it exposed some very vulnerable people, including those who were being protected from abusive spouses, when they ran name and current mailing addresses. The current series in the paper lists all the public information inquiries and decrys the fact that most of the public doesn't rush to their city halls and demand copy upon copy of every trivial piece of paper, which would cost us tons in extra tax money for every frivilous request, but how often to they publish their public files, or even remind people that they have one and how it can be accessed? Freedom of Information is designed to keep shenanigans from going uncovered, but both ends are extreme. Come on, boys and girls, what's good for the goose ...

Steve has told friends the station 'wants to go in a different direction.'

People at Channel 5 tell me to expect more changes. No ones job is safe beyond their current contract. Even Dave Dierks and Ann Carter are sweating it. Johnny Wood is safe because he continues to draw huge numbers in the morning and just signed a new long-term contract. Viewers love Johnny!

Management is upset over the loss of viewers to Channel 11 - especially in Bristol - and has called in outside consultants to help them 'fix the problem'. They want a younger, more 'hip', image.
