How does a motorcycle run a car (which we must assume the woman and kids will be in) off the road?

Trying to avoid the cycle which many cyclists, and other vehicle drivers, feel their half of the road means the middle.

That's what I suspected was meant. I don't see the risk to the occupants of oncoming CARS/TRUCKS posed by motorcycles in the wrong lane. You try to brake safely, but if the motorcycle and its rider(s) become hood ornaments on your car, well, then the culpable party has paid the price. The speed limit is low enough that you shouldn't have too much difficulty controlling your vehicle after you wipe out the idiot who was in the wrong lane. You may have to duck to avoid the cyclist coming through your windshield, but you and the occupants of your car shouldn't have much damage to your persons just from a flying biker. Unlike deer, they don't have antlers or sharp hooves.

As for swerving (as in trying to avoid the idiot) and going over the edge, DON'T DO IT. Swerving and panic braking on 421 put you at much greater risk than does controlled braking and smacking a motorcycle.

Furthermore, smacking a motorcyclist who is driving in the wrong lane constitutes community service. Especially if he has one of those really noisy cycles.

I think I have a possible answer to the problem. I think the Tennessee Highway Patrol should set up a booth at the Shady Valley Country Store and state that all speed limits for motorcycles will be waived on 421 between Bristol and Mountain City if the individuals bikers will sign an organ donor card. These individuals will be told that the state of Tennessee actually encourages you to speed and drive recklessly. You could have a couple of ambulances stand by at the store on weekends to ice em down as they bring them in, then rush them to the surgical teams in Johnson City, where lots of deserving people will get organs they need.(I wouldnt recommend using the small dysfunctional brains) In a few months the jerks would be weeded out and they will have done something constructive for once in their lives.

It looks like the Shady problem hasn't gotten any better. I'm interested in how many of the sport bike riders are VA, TN, or NC and which are the worst. Any thoughts?

You people amaze me.

I have never in my life, encountered so many one-sided, simplistic, self-centered people.
Get over yourselves. There are other users of these public roadways, and though I'm not advocating the actions or behaviour of the few, some of you people's posts border on threats of bodily harm, and advocation of murder.
The last guy, Sasquatch, although intelligently written, shows his ass as being just another opinionated redneck when it comes to the subject of motorcyclist users of PUBLIC roadways.

Unfortunatly, the few who do act the fool, are the ones people see. The rest of us are never seen, in fact outright ignored, then plowed over by that stupid jackass in his SUV, on his cell phone, drinking his Starbucks latte... Then says "I didn't see him".. But Oh, God! that damn kid on his Evil Sportbike doing 10 over the speed limit should be Crucified, and his Liver given to my Dog...

There seems to be good reason that some of us carry weapons (legally) when out on the roads. Better be careful who you "run into the ditch" next time you travel from point a to b.

The only implied threat I see on this thread just came from you cafe racer. Just shows the biker mentality, it always shows through. Ride a motorcycle ,carry a gun, trying to make up for the extreme lack of self esteem that most of these guy have. They cant stand the way they are so they try to be something they arent.

Yeah, because 'bikers' are the only people who carry guns... right.

How about your sitting behind your computer telling the world your opinions?

Come on out to the shady store sometime and spout your mouth off.

No, I didn't "threaten" anyone. jackass.

You are just yet another sad, souless individual that can't stand it that others enjoy themselves doing something other than the "9 to 5". I bet you're even the type that would "open your door" on a motorcyclist splitting lanes. Drive a truck? Something big enough to carry at least 5 people, and just cart your lazy ass around... Whatever...

PRODUCT RECALL

Saturday, June 23, 2007; D01

Motorcycle Tires

DETAILS: Michelin is recalling 19,924 motorcycle tires in the United States and Canada. The recall includes two front-tire models, the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT and Michelin Pilot Power. Both are size 120/70 ZR 17 (58W), labeled Made in France and marked with the numbers DOT 6UCW 980T and DOT 6UCW 979T on one sidewall.

DEFECT: Michelin said that at speeds exceeding normal highway riding, the tires may exhibit deformation in the tread and possible small sections of tread separation or loss. The tires could also experience a slight to excessive vibration and create an unstable riding condition, the company said.

WHAT TO DO: Schedule an appointment with a Michelin motorcycle tire dealer to have the tire replaced for free.

I have the solution for bad karma 2 wheels, trade your helmet in for a aluminum foil helmet and then pretend that you are in a tank, what a buzz.

There is no bike or rider up there that can do 150 or anywhere near that on those roads.. Get realistic and stop blowing it out of proportion.

There are several spots in Shady that 150 is attainable. It doesnt take a big bore crotch rocket all day to hit 150, Only a matter of seconds.

I don't think anyone can get to 150 mph on the mountain, just not long enough straightaways. If you are riding it at 60 mph, you must be a hell of a rider. Just watch out for the cops and other residents.....Hahahaha. Dewey Greear

As a retired cop who owns property in Shady Valley let me open your eyes "Dave". 80 to 90 percent of the crotch rockets I see pay no attention to the speed limits whatsoever 20 to 30 percent of them are flagrant and reckless. They use a federal highway as their own personal race track, much to the detriment of the people who live in the valley who have to use this road. The people in this valley have to put up with noise, congestion, and mayhem every weekend so one guy who owns one store can sell a few hotdogs. Its amazing how you bikers know whats best for the people here. How did they ever get along for 200 years without bikers. One other thing "Dave". People who buy crotch rockets buy them to go fast. How many speeding tickets has that badge gotten you out of?
Hey Valley Guy, you mean you never hung it out a little bit from time to time in that crusier before you retired. Come on.....fess up. Dewey Greear.

Yep, sounds like a good idea to me. Got my new heart 6 weeks ago. I think everyone should be a donor, many lives would be saved. Oh yeah, I'm one of those crazed riders who like going around the curves Quickly. I don't ever ride on the wrong side of the road and if I run upon traffic, I just slow down and enjoy the scenery. Don't ride a crotch rocket either, just a vintage BMW. Thanks, Dewey Greear.
