We could use some help with our Katahdin Regional Wiki project, as it's not restricted to the Katahdin region, but includes an area around this region, to include Moosehead Lake, parts of Aroostook, etc. It will always be a work in progress, and one in need of assistance. http://region.katahdincommons.com

Relieved to see that the region is headed in a positive direction. Fat times of the old GNP and it's various morphings are over. Not seeing any other large possibilities for other 'industries' filling the gap, and certainly does seem relavant to sell the area in other respects, i.e. tourism. Sense there's a struggle between the pricey greens and the blue collar good old crowd. When browsing various sources of information on this www universe the above are the two camps that seem to be evident. Graft and curruption will follow who ever has the money. A fairly normal course of events. We can rail against it yet it will continue. I'm just relieved that a gap is being filled and that another resource is being tapped to replace the old one. Certainly not those cushy positions of the old paper mill but at least the area won't shrivel further further eroding revenues. My views of the past are a bit Opie-ish. Will always have strong ties to the lakes, forest, mountain and the glories they all had to offer. To this day when visiting have to sense them before completing the visit. Hope, post retirement, to be able to spend more time 'back home' soaking up what the area has to offer.

Ktaadntexas, it's interesting that you've apparently moved from the Katahdin region to Texas, while I've moved from Texas to the Katahdin region. I lived in the Rio Grande Valley for more than 20 years before moving to Millinocket in 2001.

Heading down there, The Valley, this w/e. Going to a little town across the border, Neuva Progreso. Nephew has no dental insurance and the town is chock full of them. Place apparently built it's livelyhood on taking care of snowbirds and guys and gals like him. Been here since '76 but Millinocket has certianly been on my mind for the last few years with the monumental changes taking place. Know the community has the strengh to bounce in a positive direction. There's a bounty of resources there that don't center around paper. Getting close to retirement and am looking forward to spending more time in the area. Thanks for the note kfander

Yes, I know where that is. That's just across the border from Weslaco. I used to own part of an ambulance company based in Weslaco. Our stations were actually in Edcouch, Elsa, and Mercedes, but our offices had a Weslaco address.

I haven't been to Nuevo Progreso often, but I've been near there many times. I once ran the EMT program at the TSTC Harlingen and McAllen campuses, while I lived in Los Fresnos, just north of Brownsville.

For a change of pace, I'd often cross the border into Reynosa from Hidalso, south of McAllen, and take MX-2 to Matamoros, crossing into Brownsville, and going home that way.

It took longer, but provided some adventures; and of course, I could always pick up any prescription medication along the way.
