Well, when Coleman gets it through his thick skull that assigning more manpower to address the drug and thug problem is WAY more important than having someone write as many speeding and seat belt tickets as they can, maybe this problem can be reduced. Oh yeah, and make sure that they follow the law and procedures so the hard work does not go for naught by getting thrown out of court.

Robbery, battery, assault, shoplifting, theft, prostitution and murder are by products of drug users and dealers. Moneys and property confisgated enforcing the law for these matters would equal or surpass all the petty traffic fines and free up court time, judges time and police officers time in traffic court and give them more time to address the more dangerous crimes.

The city and sherrif's office should get together and address this quickly and effectively. This is a much more dangerous situation to the citizens of Abbeville than someone going 5mph over the speed limit.

Proper procedure and the U.S. Constitution seem not to be evident in Coleman's vocabulary. Maybe that's why he'd prefer to have some idiot cop out there accosting citizens about trivial matters while on their way to work or out shopping... he knows that your average citizen wil not take the time off of work to go to court to contest anything, making it an easy way to stuff the city coffers? What happened to cops they used to have patrolling neighborhoods on bicycles or on foot?

Can't wait till Coleman is gone and the good cops can finally get some serious leadership.

The reason for high and violent crimes is due to the plea bargains in the courts. A violent criminal can rat out a drug dealer and get credit for time served. The principals in our Judicial System has changed. When someone was sentenced to life in prison for Robbery or Murder it was just that. Now they get out on good behavior and commit the same crime they were paroled for. Our court system has the priorites wrong. You get more time for drug offenses than you get for violent crimes on a person. Something is wrong with this picture. The Police do their job, it is sad that the Prosecuters and DA's don't. The Police have no say so once the charges are brought to the DA's office. That is where the wheeling and dealing begins.

This is sad but true. There should not be time credited for "ratting" on someone. Yes they do get out and if not commit the same crime they will another. The APD is a joke! And where are those elected officials, there needs to be a town meeting. Some parents are interested in educating and in the safety of their kids. There is too much going on in the schools and on the streets and I am afraid for my kids to go riding through these areas. We have friends and family that live there and the area used to be very nice, safe, and clean. But the recent events that has occurred is like no other. There needs to be a meeting with council to get ideas on how to rectify the problems etc.

Regardless if the juvenile is tried as an adult or not, the parents should also have to do hard time. If some of these deadbeat parents were held responsible for their childrens actions, we wouldn't have so many children committing violent crimes! Children, teenagers w/ AK-47's? How in the hell are they getting their hands on weapons like that? Those types of weapons in Abbeville? I think this town has gone downhill after the hurricanes and we got so many people from New Orleans. I am not saying it is New Orleans people doing these crimes, but now the drug dealers and criminals have connections to New Orleans or Houston to get those drugs and weapons! Get rid of the drug dealers and you would most likely get rid of the drugs, guns and violent criminals!

Keep building low income housing. Desperate people do desperate things... You think it's bad now wait until all the new housing developments fill up. People from surrounding areas can come on in, we have plenty of room.
I think we should build nice homes if any, not 100 carbon copies of the same home. In fact, maybe put a bowling alley in or some kind of clean fun for people to do so they can stay and spend money here instead of going to Lafayette for everything. There is nothing to do but go to the movies or a bar in this town.

Do you really think having a bowling alley---nice, clean fun, would help decrease crime in Abbeville? The skating rink, if still open, has a hard time getting the hoodlums to behave. The 'desperate' people don't want nice, clean fun. They are doing what they want to do in Abbeville--make their children's lives miserable and harm others. The 'they' I'm referring to are the ones not doing the right thing, getting into trouble, etc. Nice homes will not get those intent on doing the wrong thing to straighten up either.

We will always have hundreds of drug dealers as long as Coleman is in office. It was so nice to look at yesterdays newspaper and see Tony Hardy is running. He'll put a large dent in the drug trade, by either putting them behind bars, or the heat will be so hot, they'll move to another city.

It would appear to most people that this section of town with these crimes would be more important than a damn ice cream festival. The City needs to prioritize it's resources and address this element immediately.
Window dressing and pretty quotes in the newspaper never have done a damn thing and wont get it done now.
Where are the elected officals for the City and Jury? Where are they now? Might be time to call in the cavalry.
Excuse me, you are saying take money away from a family ice cream festival is going to solve the drug and violence problem we have? IT's never going to be solved. Evil people will always be around.Prohibition didn't work!!! Of course our police need to do more. But that would take more of a force which means more taxes!!!

I'm glad Tony is running. But he is not a miracle worker. Drugs will always be in every town. Put them in jail? You mean New Iberia? and don't we pay taxes for that? another tax raise?

These are not New Orleans people doing these crimes. They are born and raised in Abbeville. DRUGS are the main problem. Seriously, how can this be fixed? How long have many places been fighting the same fight? Drug education in schools and DARE are not working. It starts at home. Parents let their kids drink, watch porn, play inappropriate video games and do drugs! How do you fix this?

I read just the entire article and watched the video with Thibodeaux. He doesn't think drugs were involved? LOL He wants to let these kids fight each other in a boxing ring and then they can shake hands? LOL There's a certain mentality among these young kids today and one fight leads to another. If someone gets hurt in the ring, then the city will be sued, no doubt!

Sounds like you would be against taxes to control crime, but in another topix you are for the school board tax. Maybe you're really a Teacher!

I would be for more taxes to go to our police and fire department. Those guys put their lives on the line for us. Yes some are bad. There's bad people in every aspect of society. But if they need more money I would give it! But I was mentioning the tax thing sarcastically because so manyposts seem to be against any new taxes. Maybe I am a teacher...LOL

I really feel sorry for the old people who bought a house and lived in it for 40 years and now the neighborhood is so bad they can't go outside withour being in fear. They can't sell and move because the house in that part of town isn't worth anything, if they could sell it.
I've lived here for 40 years and have watched it evolve in to a crime ridden parish over that time. Parenting is a must change, also a change in the voting public. We have to elect people who care, not the ones who only want to line their pockets or that look the other way because of "friends".

OUR TOWN HAS GOTTEN TO BE HORRIFING, I WAS BORN, RAISED, AND WILL PROBABLY ALSO DIE HERE, AND THE MAIN PROBLEM WITH OUR TOWN IS WE NEED MORE POEPLE TO BE PARENTS TO THEIR CHILDREN, AND FOR PEOPLE TO STOP BEING SCARED OF THESE DRUG DEALERS, AND THUGS AND CALL THE COPS EVERYTIME THEY SEE SOMETHING, AND YES IT'S TIME FOR A HARDY BOY TO TAKE BACK THE CONTROL OVER THIS TOWN AND OUR OFFICALS NEED TO CONSULT WITH MAURICE POLICE DEPT., BET ALL OF YOU BEHAVE WHEN YA'LL ROLE INTO MAURICE, OR EVEN ERATH AND CHEIF COLEMAN NEEDS TO GET OVER HIMSELF AND WHATEVER PROBLEMS HE HAS WITH VPSO, THOSE GUYS WORK HARD TOO, AND ALL OUR GUYS ON THE FORCE NEED A RAISE, AND ALL OUR SUPPORT, LET ME REMIND ALL OF YOU THEY ARE DEALING WITH THE TRASH WE DON'T WANT TO AND THOSE BOYS DO A DANG FINE JOB OF THEY JUST NEED MORE HELP, AND MONEY TO KEEP THE GOOD COPS WE HAVE, HAVE YALL NOTICED ALL OUR GOOD COPS LEAVE FOR DEPT. WITH BETTER PAY, I DON'T MIND PAYING MORE TAXES FOR MORE PATROL WE NEED A FEW GOOD MEN WE NEED A STRONG ARMY FOR ABBEVILLE IF WE ARE EVER GOING TO GET ANYTHING DONE RIGHT FOR ABBEVILLE, AND ALL THESE BAD KIDS JUST NEED THEIR PARENTS TO BEND THEIR BUTTS POVER AND GIVE THEM WHAT THEY DRSERVE,IT NEVER HURT ANYBODY TO TAKE A GOOD OLD FASHION BEHIND WHIPPEN, AND THEN PUT THEM IN THEIR ROOMS TILL THEY LEARN SOME RESPECT, KIDS TODAY HAVE NO RESPECT, AND RESPECT COMES FROM GOOD PARENTING, SO MAKE THE PARENTS LIABLE IF THEY CHOOSE NOT TO PUT THE TIME IN TO BE GOOD PARENTS, START LOCKING UP THE PARENTS I BET THEY START WATCHING THEIR KIDS LOL, I KNOW I WOULD, BUT ASK ME WHERE MY KIDS ARE ALL TIMES I CAN ANSWER THAT QUESTION, SO THIS IS MY OPINION YA'LL LET ME KNOW IF U AGREE!!!!

I agree, it is that type of mentality that has our youth where it is today. No fun family functions? These kids need more family functions to stay out of trouble, people.

I have noticed a big change in people's attitudes towards the police department since Jay Captiville left for Dallas. Of course, everyone agrees Rick Coleman needs to go packing too, being replaced by Tony Hardy.
