I just moved from the Austin, Texas area to Erath,La due to a job transfer. I will soon start to build a house on property that I just have bought. Any suggestion to where there is good building material in the area? Thanks any help would be appreciated.

If you want good material at great prices with excellent service go to Otto Hebert Lumber company in Delcambre,La...They have been in business since 1953 longer than any other lumber yard in the parish...They also have the best service and most knowledge staff, you will not be disapointed!

Stay away from the big boxes like Stine and Lowe they have no service at all. They believe in low wages and even lower sales coverage, when you go into there store you are on your own if you want help, good luck finding any one there especially at night time they only have 3 or 4 workers for the whole store.

I wish I would knew of an honest place. But the others are right.....stines and lowes seems helpful in the beginning but always turns out they aren't. I wish you luck!

If you are shopping price alone, Otto Hebert and Minvielle are the best price in the area for lumber.
I myself shop at both places. I used to check prices, but then I discovered that Otto Hebert always had a good price and many times was cheaper. Minviells prices on some things is cheaper than Otto. Either place will always beat Lowes and Stines price on building materials. Lowes will have the best price on a few items. I.E. OSB and precut studs and a few other items. But overall, you will pay more for lumber at Lowes on almost everything else.

If you are in a hurry, Otto is much easier to get in and out. Minville should have moved a bigger location years ago. Their yard so tight to get in and out of. It's a pain in the butt.

Either Otto Hebert, Minville or Meauxs lumber. My husband is a carpenter from Erath and he has worked for all three. They are all nice and very friendly.

Stine's was a great place to shop...with a nice selection and helpful employees, all until Lowes showed up. Lowes is the big box, not Stine Lumber.

If you go to Stine ask to talk to the head manager and you will see why people choose not to shop there. The guy is clueless. And at Lowes you have to pay more taxes, I would go else where for products.

Yep, I second that. he just doesn't seem like management material. I think they cut their basic managers pay scale, and dropped their criteria. I went into that place five years ago, when I was just getting started. Otto was giving me ten percent off. I asked stines if they could give me a contractors discount. They ignored me. Five years ago, I was only buying about a thousand dollars a month in materials. Today I purchase about 4500.00 a month. I purchase the majority of my stuff at Otto.

If we're getting plumbing materials, gardening things, or miscellaneous things to spruce up my home, I don't mind going to Stine's or Lowe's. The prices on different things vary too much to be comparable. But when it comes to purchasing lumber, wood mouldings, flooring materials, and construction materials, Otto Hebert (Delcambre) is the absolute best. The materials are always of higher quality. Several times we've had to return defective or substandard materials to Stine's and Lowe's. We also prefer to go to Otto Hebert because Garland, Troy, and the other guys really know what they're talking about. They know their products and know about construction. When we go to Stine's or Lowe's, I find the workers very young, very inexperienced, and really unknowledable. They don't know anything about construction and they don't know about their materials.

First of all if you have to come on Topix and ask where you can find good lumber you don't know what to do with it after you buy it. So just go on the side of the road and find you an old piece of scrap and be finished with it.
