How many follow the catholic practice of giving something up for Lent? And if you do, what are you giving up?
Or maybe changing during Lent?

I've got my own pair of batman underoos and I'm not giving them up for Lent. My plan is to give up on spider-man.

Hey Mitch...these are little boys size 12-14, red, Spiderman across the back and a web on the front...one pair new, two pairs used lightly. Don't mistake them for a Valentine if you find them in your mail.

Lent is a Christian period of prayer and penitence.

Everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone feels bad about it afterward, and if you’re someone who has regretted something you did or did not do, that sorrowful feeling was penitence.

There is plenty of room for pentinence on Topix, right?

Dawn, although the beginning of your post appears to be sincere, reading the way it ends leaves a question about whether or not you're being that, or sarcastic. I'd like to believe that it's the former and be able to respond to it with that in mind, but can you please confirm to me your intent?(And just in case you aren't sure, I'm being completely, 100% sincere with this reply). Fair?

My wife went out to the Mardi Gras and got slap drunk. Came home incoherent and puked not too long after. Today, she will go and receive ashes on her forehead.

I, on the other hand didnt party for Mardi Gras because I told her I'd stay home to avoid the crazy people and the trouble, and that I had grown past making a fool of myself or putting on a show of myself at Mardi Gras. I was labled as hating the world and a party pooper.

Today, I will not receive ashes, because I feel I don't need to. Who is the bad person? Me or her?

Wife, if you read this....I love you. Dont get mad ok? Just making a small point.

Im not giving up anything or getting ashes...and I ate meat today. At one time, yes, not eating meat was a sacrifice, something that pained you to do without. Today, since you can eat seafood instead of meat, its no longer a sacrifice. Therefore I dont participate in the Ash Wednsday and Friday lent ritual of skipping meat. I choose not to punish myself by "suffering through a sack of crawfish, snow crab legs or good old fried catfish instead of settling for a cheap burger. Unless someone actually dislikes seafood, its not a sacrifice. Its a reward on Fridays. Think about why you do what you do and make sure it makes sense. Dont just do it because your grandmothers, grandmothers grandmother did it.

Hey noahsesforme....good point, I ate meat too, mmmmmm. Catholics think if they do these stupid ritials they are being a good servant of God. I think that they forget that God sees the other 364 days off the year they are drinking beer, smoking, cursing, letting their kids go astray but hey....behold the ashes and the confession booth. and oh by the way, I remember reading the bible and it saying the the way to heaven was through God not the confession booth. Wonder how you get that kind of job? Apparantly it was too tempting hearing all the secrets so they had to take it our on boys. My next point GOD made WOMAN to keep a man company. So who on this EARTH dedecided it is NOT ok from priest to have a woman (accept God's gift from beng lonely please). Its a gift people!!!! Use it, not your alter boys. Oh and I guess the Pope really got a message from GOD! He is probably embarrased. Bet a big scandle is about to break!

That the ugly truth.....look it up.....
That may very well have been one reason. In the very early years priest were allowed to be married and the " elders" were the preferred status. It's been a long time since I reseached the subject. There were more hidious underlying reasons why Rome put an end to marriage. Total disrespect and domination of women as second class subjects to manipulated and subjegated. Obey and follow or be designated a witch. No fair trial. Death soon followed.

I find this interesting. I will offer more factual historical readings later. I think these two fellows may have some good readings but I don't know if I even have their names right.
Picknett and Prince.

Had a rough day and I'm tired but I'll try some research tomorrow. In the meantime, just so people do not disbelieve us, here's a lame but truthful link.

The catholic church has put more people to death for science, alchemy, differing beliefs, non-belief, rule of nations, heresy, alleged witchcraft, mental illness, greed for wishes and belongings of others and countless other reasons than all the wars the world has ever seen.

With the loss of CONTROL has come the loss of fear and the loss of membership.
That may be a good thing. People can now believe and practice without fear making faith a true belief from ones heart and soul.

The whole matter of Catholicism is complex, ironic, and contradictory. Even from doctrine.

I think back to about '73 or '74.
Fantastic new music was emerging in the UK.
Jethro Tull/Aqualung was one of my favorites. Having a flute playing lead in a rock and roll band was unheard of and cutting edge great.
Albums were still theme based back then with all the great songs being related in some fashion to a central theme.
Anyone who truly knew what that was about has always asked themselves:
...did god create man in his own image
Or did man create god in his own image...
