Not sure what kind of sex-charged middle schoolers you've got in your area, but I wouldn't consider that a rational fear.
Why, why, WHY do people continue to believe that horn-crazed 11 and 12 year olds are banging away every opportunity? This is patently untrue. Typically, boys don't even become interested in sex til about 13/14. And girls that age aren't interested at all.
I wouldn't say "every opportunity", but it's there and it is happening. And girls feel the pressure whether they are interested or not. I'd like to think most girls are taught to resist that (and they need to learn how to anyway), but still... The MS-er I know well had "lesbians" hitting on her and everything else. In 7th grade.

*shudder* I wouldn't re-do middle school again if you paid me, but the thought of having to be at *home* all the time with my mom and sister at that age would have been the things nightmares were made of.
I hear you. I didn't enjoy middle school very much myself. 6th grade wasn't so bad, but I went to a new school in 7th grade (there were two junior highs in my town and I moved to the other one). On top of that, it's just an awkward time of life. I only weighed 75 pounds or so in 7th grade and was kind of small.

I went from being one of the most popular kids and dating hot chicks (puppy love) in 6th grade to having just a few friends (I was grateful for that) and few girls (different class too) in 7th grade, lol. I definitely moved down a few spots in the pecking order, and kids who were higher up at my new school weren't nearly as nice as I was to others when I was more popular. It was then that I learned how cruel kids can be. I was never like that.

I didn't really like school that much until I was in high school, where all the kids from the two middle schools came together. Most of my friends in high school were from my old middle school or a few years older than me, and I was so happy that I wasn't stuck with the tools from the other school. The guys from my old school were so much cooler and as we went through high school most of the girls wanted to party with us, rather than those dorks. Eventually girls who wouldn't give me the time of day in junior high, came around.

By the time I was a senior, I had put the beat down on a few of the tougher kids in school (destroyed) and was 175 pounds and was kind of looked up to by the underclassmen. All the time, I even had underclassmen that I didn't even know at all see me in the hall and they'd know who I was and would make it a point to say "hey Sublime" (they'd call me by last name, tho), which was kind of cool because I remember being an underclassman and looking up to certain older guys. Same at parties. Things sorta came full circle for me.

As tough as that period of life was for me, I think adversity pays dividends and makes you a better person. I wouldn't trade it, but it suxed at the time.

My "middle school" was only 7th and 8th grade. i think that's much better than including 6th.

I went to a K-8, Chicago Public School. There are certain things that still rattle around in my head from those days. One girl who made a mean comment is someone who I have encountered periodically in teh last 50 years and I still remeber her shot. I know her SIL better now and it turned out she had an acid tongue all along.

Watching my girls go through middle school, is probably a better example. One girl, possibly more was giving BJ in the bathroom at Caribou Coffee; a group realized teh back door of a local store had been left unlocked and helped themselves until the cops intervened. One girl hung herself.
