This is the second of two fatal shooting in my neighborhood within a month, there was also a shooting at Irving and Cicero a few weeks ago. Being a lifetime resident of this neighborhood I will have to say that the Hispanic thugs moving into the neighborhood are fully to blame for the increase in crime. Damn sanctuary cities!

Obviously not, a little girl was sexually assaulted at grace and(about 2 blocks south of portage park) during the summer of 2007.

What is it with the gun culture in this stupid country? "Right to bear arms blah blah blah" - no other civilised country in the Western world has such huge numbers of gun deaths as the U.S.

Yanks, try growing up and behaving in a civilised fashion.

A young man was shot and killed at Lavergne and Addison a few weeks ago, now this fatal shooting on Central near Berteau. If you live in this neighborhood you would know these crimes are unprecedented for the area. Until you can come up with an intelligent response, SHUT UP!
I agree.

This is the 4th shooting and the second homicide in less then a month in the Portage Park area.

All the gangbanger Puerto Ricans are being gentrified out of Logan Square by yuppies and coming up to ruin Portage Park now.

There are plenty of burbs that have gang problems. Everyone who wants to escape gangs will not fit in (and cannot afford to live in) the few gang-free suburbs like Kenilworth and Lake Forest. It used to be just border suburbs like Bellwood, Harvey, etc., but now you have gangs in Mount Prospect, Elgin, Aurora, etc.

I know the Trib caters to suburbanites, but it really should know the city better. They have corrected the article to say Albany Park but the headline still says Portage Park. This killing happened near Irving and Elston, which is a good mile-and-a-half east. Not far for the burbs, but makes a big difference in the city.

Actually, they also changed the street from Central to Central Park in the article, so there is a lot of sloppiness going on. Maybe Zell cut the staff already.

Yo people, take a breath and sigh. The 4100 hundred block of central park is not,and I repeat,IS NOT PORTAGE PARK,It's Albany Park. And that particular area has a high percentage of Hispanics there. The reporter obviously dosen't know the neighborhoods in the city.
I lived in Albany Park, right down the street from Roosevelt High School. The story says "Daniel Rivera of the 3500 block of West Berteau Avenue, who was in his 20s, was shot about 2:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of North Central Avenue".

IT IS NOT THE GUN CULTURE IN OUR COUNTRY - IT IS THE NITWITS WHO DO NOT KNOW HOW TO BEHAVE IN SOCIETY - QUIT BLAMING GUNS - THEY CAN'T FIRE UNLESS SOMEONE PICKS ONE OUP AND PULLS THE TRIGGER. THESE GANGBANGERS DON'T BOTHR TO ACQUIRE A GUN CARD - THEY LIKE IT ALL ILLEGAL - THEY ARE ALL RABBLE.

Yet down here in Houston we have free reign on guns and our crime rate is about half that of Chicago's.

Central and Central Park DOES make a world of a difference! Those are COMPLETELY different neighborhoods.

But the news is sloppy in Chicago. They're better at writing bad articles against the police than the gang bangers.

I thought Tom Allen was taking care of the crime problem in that area. It must be true because I saw it on TV.

With all of his courtroom experience defending criminals in the Public Defenders office, I am not so sure the NW siders; or anyone else for that matter, should sleep too comfortably with the prospect that he now wants to be the top criminal prosecutor.

We'll have to wait to see if they round somebody up for this one, but it may have been that this crime was committed by someone he previously helped stay out of jail on some legal technicality, that had nothing to do with innocence.

The article says Central not Central Park, but either way the city is less safe in Albany Park and Portage Park (and every neighborhood in between) than it was even 5 years ago. I hope our new "Top Cop" has some new plans for fighting these street gangs, but the average citizen MUST get involved as well. Call the police when you see something wrong. Not reporting gang activity, whether through fear, indifference, or just because you think it's none of your business only allows the gangs to become stronger, and thus you, and innocent children weaker.
Also, talk to the children of the neighborhood, whether your own or your neighbors, about gangs and the choices they need to make, and help them understand why staying clear is the right choice. If we got rid of all the bad cops tomorrow, and doubled the force with all honest, hardworking, police officers, the police department would still need our help. Most times the people in the neighborhood know who the gangbangers are, and only if we all get involved can we stop this problem. Our children and grandchildren's lives may depend on it.

Also, just for the record, there are PLENTY of white kids in gangs. Portage Park has had white kids belonging to gangs for at least 10 years that I know of, probably longer than that.
