Here's one place.

I didn't assume the LW was from Colorado - I was using Colorado as an example. I can't believe that Florida or any state still allows used mattresses to be sold. With the horrible bedbug problems all over the U.S., it is just stupid to buy a used mattress or any kind of stuffed furniture for that matter and risk bringing them into your house. It gives me the creeps just thinking about it.

<quoted text>Poperly? Who defines what that means? And in places where that is the law, who's really enforcing that? I pulled up craigslist and searched for "bed" in the furniture for sale section. There were 40 listings just from today alone. I doubt any of them did anything special to prep the mattress for sale.
And that is why it is so creepy.

I've never bought one, but I had a room mate who bought at least 2 mattresses used from a placethat would sell second hand furniture from hotels. He never had a problem.

What horrible bedbug problem? And what do you do when you travel? Have you never stayed on a bed in a hotel?

IT is a big problem. I am guessing you've missed the news coverage of this. "This American Life" did a story on it as well and it was disturbing.

LW1 - Part of Amy's advice is way off. In Colorado, it is illegal to sell used mattresses at garage sales, Salvation Army, thrift stores or anywhere else because of the bedbug risk. Just tell the 20 yr old he can sleep on the floor until he saves up for a new mattress and box spring. He'll live. BTW, air mattresses cost about $100.
Used mattresses are gross. But you can actually get a decent air mattress for $40-$50 and that is a good idea. Or you can even get a cheap one for just a couple hundred bucks if you catch a sal.

LW1 - the letter says a bedroom set - which makes me think he's after a head/foot board, couple of dressers, maybe a matching nightstand or two. Yeah, mom & dad should not go into debt for that. adn if the kid can't get more credit, well, tehn he can wait until he frees some up or until he digs enough quarters out of teh couch and car...

BTW, been married nearly 10 years, and i don't have a matching set... unless you count the TV trays that match that we're using as bedstands.

Sure, if it is pee stained or bedbug infested. But in general, what's the big deal? Granted, I would prefer to buy a new mattress, but I am puzzled by this idea that used mattresses are just inherently gross. Do you feel gross laying on a bed in a hotel?

That is where a lot of the bedbug problems are is in hotels. Travel experts are recommending wrapping your luggage in plastic while in a hotel room. Also, it is recommended to check new bedding and washing it before use. I can't believe you haven't heard about this.

I know what you are saying about a hotel, but in someone's house, you don't know if they have fleas or bedbugs or anything like that. Just gross. And I try not to think about it when I am in a hotel.

I have all my bedbugs trained and treat them very well. They would never think of hitch hiking to a new pad via suitcase.

I used to give my friend crap about his second hand bed. Would tell him it was a some crack wh-0-re's former office.
Of course, I was travelling at the time for work on a weekly basis. And he would just remind me about the bed I'd been sleeping in.

I was married almost 20 years before I sprung for a bedroom suite. Never felt like we were suffering.....

BTW, I'd like to throat punch the LW's son. Another entitled young adult is my diagnosis.

Or maybe he moved home to help his parents when dad took ill.

(BTW group, thanks for teh mattress convo. I have been nagging younger daughter to do something with her college mattress and now I know she probably can't)

I wouldn't blame LW1 if she bought him that sleeping bag and told him to save for something more comfortable.

Sold my entire bedroom set to couple (friends) when I moved in with J. It's in their guest bedroom, but I like to let them know what's been done on that bed before they got it.

Did it involve a donkey, midget amputee, 2 quarts of vegetable oil, and a snorkel?

Well, it was probably a long time ago that his roomie was doing that. The problems hasn't been that bad here for that long.
And NEW bedding? I could see checking used, but new stuff? I'm going to wash it to get the sizing out anyway, but not because I am worried that it would come from the factory infested.
We'll likely never stay in a motel again now, so I'm just not going to worry about it.
