This editorial board, and the citizens of IL who's US Senate seat belongs too, should insist - INSIST - that a special election be passed immediately by the IL Legislature - and anyone who votes against it, or advocates against its passage, should have the same focus this editorial has given toward those on the Cook County Board who have been so derelict, inept, and contemptuous toward the citizens and taxpayers that they serve.

It is only the people of IL who can consent too our next Senator - and in the Land of Lincoln, the principle of "For the people, of the people, and by the people" should be more than lip service from our current crop of politicians who are doing a grave disservice too the legacy of all those who sacrificed in the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and Civil Rights Movement.

Settle for nothing less than a Senator who governs on behalf the people with the Peoples Consent!
One thing though

Maybe the silence is just the sound of politicians at all levels heeding the biblical injunction to "let him who is without sin cast the first stone." Nobody has ever gotten elected to anything without lying.

This is a good editorial. Hypocritical as all hell, given that The Chicago Tribune turned a blind eye to the corruption in the Republican Party, especially at the federal level, for the last 8 years. But still a well-written editorial.

Burris won't survive a primary challenge.

He should step down, or the Illinois legislature can remove him.

But in either case, he is gone. Loved the radio host who said Burris is sounding more like Whinney the Pooh every day.

Just kep sitting on the door step and wait for the box of free crap that will change your life.

Special election is the only acceptable solution. And the democrats should run Burris. And the Madigan clan needs a closer look and some exposure. Mike ain't being clean. Mike's been around way too long. Lisa, uh uh babe. You are there only because of dada.

Democrats managed to keep Burris' new affidavit in a desk drawer until AFTER he had cast his needed vote for the stimulus package. As usual, the Dems place politics above democracy...with a small "d."

How about the silence of obama instead? For a man who uses the term transparent every other word, he has been anything but. Thats all he talks about but the stimulus bill wasnt made available to the public to review before it was voted on, much less available to anyone in congress. obama also has issued executive orders without any of them being made public thru the news media. He sent more troops to Afghanistan without so much as a peep, and hasnt posted anything on that magical website he said would keep the public aware of everything his administration was doing. obama has been the opposite of transparent and has done nothing but lie about every promise he has made.

The Burris vote is so important to Obama that it trumps the requirements for integrity and sanity.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Illinois legislature cannot remove a sitting Senator.

The elected officials in state, Reps and Dems, do not care for the citizens of this state, only for their own power and backroom deals. As bad as Burris is for lying his way into office, worse is the silence from the corrupt hacks who are hoping the thing blows over. The clown fight continues. IL slides furhter back.

The prominent Dems you mention are all Illinois-based - and I include Barack Obama, because when this sorry episode began to unfold he had yet to be inaugurated. But those in the U.S. Senate, especially Senators Harry Reid and Richard Durbin, our undistinguished senior senator form Illinoisr, were complicit as well. In the narrow partisan interests of not wanting to allow Illinois citizens their undoubted right to elect a successor to Obama (particularly in light of the auction process set by by our odious ex-governor) and risk having the seat go Republican, they connived in this travesty. Regardless as to how the Dems' damage control plays out, let's hope the voters' sense of outrage carries over into the 2010 elections. It's long past time for a general housecleaning at several governmental levels.

I believe you are correct. The U.S. Senate could remove him but don't hold your breath.

If you think the inhabitants of the local political cesspool will do something honorable regarding the slimy Burris, you also probably think that parking at Chicago meters still costs 25 cents per hour. The title" Trailblazer" on Burris' tombstone should also include "down the Primrose Path". Keep hitting 'em with body punches Trib.
