2 Critically Hurt In Crash After Police Pursuit

Jan 12, 2008 Full story: cbs2chicago.com 42

Two people are reported to be in critical condition after a monumental crash in the Far South Side's Mt. Greenwood neighborhood that followed a suburban police pursuit early Saturday.

The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. around 110th Street and Kedzie Avenue, following a pursuit by Merrionette Park police from the near south suburb into the city, authorities said.

The two victims were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where they were both reported in critical condition. Read more

I still don't get police chases. Most of the time you hear about innocent people being injured or killed.

It's a hard call though. If someone has just committed a crime with a weapon or is so drunk that leaving them on the road puts more people at risk - you sometimes just have to go for it.

Maybe they could just follow them slowly until their gas runs out? At $3+/gallon most people don't have the money to fill all the way up.

No one knows though if the police decided to not chase him anymore and he continued to drive 115mph down kedzie...they may have given up on him once they saw he was endangering other cars...who knows. He is more of a danger left on the streets though. That I'm certain of. Its always ashame though that the innocent ones get hurt and the addicts who are behind the wheel of the deadly SUV's walk away barely injured.

True. I just found it odd that the police had no comment.

I once witnessed a driver next to me drinking beer while driving. He was swerving so much that I asked my then boyfriend (now husband) to slow down and stay as far away from him as possible. As we went down a two-lane road that had guard rails on the side he went over the center line and hit a lady head on. We jumped out of the car and found her unconscious in the front seat. The guy went over by the bushes and threw his beer can away (I believe) and came out staggering with a majorly broken nose that didn't seem to phase him at all. I had told the police that I personally witnessed him drinking but they wouldn't take my information because I was about 19 at the time or because they already knew they had enough evidence to show he was drunk driving.

My prayers are with the innocent victims.

Wonder why you are so quick to judge? Did you see the accident happen. If he was speeding people do it all the time. I pray for both of the drivers. Accidents happen. The guy in the SUV is a good guy, we all make mistakes. He has lost more then one person could take. This accident has just added to his pain. The Merrionette Park Police are always crossing the line over to chicago, think about that. I for one know they pull people over for no reason at all they have like 2 small streets to patrol Kedzie and 115th. We are talking a small run down town Merrionette Park is Lucky to be next to Mt. Greenwood. I avoid driving threw the crap village and go around. Stay on your own side MP Police and this would have never of happen.

No, but HE should not have been drinking and driving period! I am sure he is a good guy, but now he has hurt someone completely innocent that does not deserve to be in the hospital and in a coma! That may be why people are so quick to judge!

The young man that was injured is my parent's next door neighbor. He needs a prayer from everyone who reads this, as it does not look good for him. Please pray for a miracle that he lives.

The guy that was the victim in this accident is my friend. As for you Mrs. L who are you to say that the jerk that hit my friend is a good guy???? I was at the hospital yesterday to visit my friend and lets just say that the guy that hit him is a piece of crap. My friend has been in the hospital for 2 WEEKS and he is in bad shape still. My friend was a good person and a good guy and did nothing to deserve this. He had to celebrate his golden birthday laying in a hospital still not sure why he is there.

he's a heroin junkie. His parents would be sickened.

The Merrionette Park police are known for arresting people for no reason. I was arrested for obstruction of justice when a cop grabbed my son by the throat and then I pushed the cop off my son. Then they didn't even arrest my son-they arrested me. Another time they took me in 2 days after I called the truancy officer to come and get my son to take him to school. They said it child neglect. For making my son go to school? I plan on starting a class action lawsuit against the police dept. If anyone has any solid cases against them,I recommend you do the same.

The guy who is hurt should of had his seatbelt on. That is why he is in the condition he is in, everone wants to blame the other driver. Accidents happen it was an accident, So now what send the guy to jail because the other guy is hurt/dead not sure of his status as of today. He was not wearing a seatbelt that is why he was ejected from his car. Seatbelts saves lives, he is the only one to blame. Plus i wonder what he was doing driving at that time anyway. Bet he was leaving a bar. Look at the pictures from the scene of the accident, any fool can see the pick up truck hit the SUV look at the damage. I hpoe all you dummies think before you post such comments about this accident. I now it is the Law in IL to wear your seatbelt. Give the hurt guy a ticket for the seatbelt violation and another one for being stupid. And as for his friend that visits him in the hospital tooo bad, when or if your friend wakes up let him know he flew threw the air like a bird because he did not have his seatbelt on DUMMIES!

What a good friend you are Mike Knight. To post your friends name on this board. Heroin Junkie's are sick and if you are his friend then I bet you are a junkie too. I will make sure to let Mike O. know what you said and posted. You ever think he is on drugs Because his father was killed buy a drunk driver and his mom passed away from cancer. I would be all messed up to if I lost both of my parents. What a friend you are, jerk.

Hey SMART ONE why don't you THINK? Everyone knows O.D.(o'donnell's nickname) was f'd up on H for awhile. Years. And yes, the death of his parents (BY A DRUNK DRIVER and cancer) should be taken into consideration at his sentencing. To blame the OTHER DRIVER is ludicrous. Lemme guess, you are also a junkie...or are you just one of those lil Mt. Greenwood trashballs that sit around waiting for something to complain about? Like this, for example. His parents would be rolling over in their graves seeing what he turned out as. And as for your insane comments about the other driver "what was he doing driving at that time...leaving a bar" you cannot make such assumptions. Do you have a job?(Pro'ly on welfare, right, smartone) he could have been going to work. It's irrelevant. To say all that shit is tantamount (ugh, big words confusing you, hon?) to blaming a rape on a victim.

OD fucked up. Now he will (and yes, HE WILL) rot in prison for years. A ticket for being stupid? Sweetheart, what if it was your kid, or your mom, in that other car? I hope next time it is...your family member 'flying through (you said threw, obviously a GEDer) the air like a bird' and I wish that the real Mike Knight (how do you NOT know him he's in prison) would whoop yer ass. Go drink antifreeze.

First place, why did they chase this guy? Did he shoot somebody? Run someone over? None of the above. It's Merriontte Park police way of feeling important. Living in the neighborhood I have seen many of thier actions. It's a 2 bit village. Try pulling over the patrons of 115th Bourbon St when they're getting into thier cars after 2am.

From what I know it was a Midlothian squad car that hit and injured the innocent victim. Merrionette Park assisted with trying to apprehend the offender. Youre excuse of speeding doesn't wash. Going 115 MPH down Kedzie Ave is inexcusable. When a crime is committed a police office has an obligation to stop the offender. Way back in the 1800's you could cross town/state lines and the police had to stop. This is 2008. I donít care how much this guy has been through, there is always someone who has gone through more in their life time and they don't go around driving 115 mile an hour. Youíre just making excuses for an idiot. Put the blame where it belongs on the moron driving 115 MPH.

Yep, it was the policemans fault. Yes, he was the wrong one. The police are always wrong, and so are the teachers. And if they are white or Asian they are racist. Then let's have days off for the kids to march and complain that there are not enough cops protecting them.
