The police report also fails to mention when Officer Crowley determined this was not a crime, nor his efforts to attempt to diffuse the situation. Perhaps he needs to attend one of his own diversity trainings. On the other hand, Dr. Gates PhD did over-react, but I put the burden the cop to figure out that the citizen was upset and to diffuse the situation.

It is my understanding the more information you can give to 911 the better they are prepared to find the perpetrator.

What is she to do if she does see 2 African American men with backpacks attempting to dislodge a door to a home?

My guess is she won't be calling 911 again and neither will others who use this whole debacle as evidence that maybe it's best to mind your own business and not get involved.

I don't understand - should she or anyone in that neighborhod NOT look out for each other - just ignore if they see anyone suspicious(sp?) trying to get into someone's home for fear of being called a racist?? Check out this story where a reporter has talked to Whalen's sister. In this article it says that Whalen noticed the break-in FROM HER OFFICE WINDOW - not out on the street, which means the part about her saying that an "elderly woman" on the street pointed it out to her - doesn't add up.

What if she saw it, came out of her office to get a better look, either met a lady then who was also suspicious and she called.
OR the lady was somebody from her office and they both came down together to gawk. When they asked her for the address, she gave her OFFICE address, 7 Ware Street, and then corrected it to 17 Ware.
Go to bing.com and maps, type in 17 Ware Street and check out the house. It is not a "residential street". It has one house next to it and then several large buildings all around. That would pretty much narrow down any "elderly neighbor." Why hasn't she materialized since, according to Ms. Whalen, she saw more of it than she did.
Did the elderly neighbor leave and not stay for the police to arrive, if so, why - especially if she had seen more than Ms. Whalen. None of the police officers mention seeing or speaking to the elderly neighbor in either their police reports or in on camera interviews. Does she, in fact, exist except as a prop for Ms. Whalen?
