Hey! Whaddaya know, my MIL is pulling this stuff as I type!

My SIL and her BF were in town this weekend. SIL tried setting up a time to go visit her mom but MIL was always "too tired" or they had to go grocery shopping or some bullcrap. Plus, my SIL goes to church and hangs with her friends here and we had some nice dinners planned. Finally, my MIL has a window in her busy schedule of doing nothing--Sunday night. Well, we had planned a game night for that night, so SIL only stuck around her parent's place for a half hour or so and then she left (I'm sure she was glad to have an excuse to leave). Now my MIL is betching to J about SIL "abandoning" her or some junk.

Do yourself a favor and have the party at a nice backroom of a restaurant.
Except for the private room thing, that is primarily how we and our friends tend to celebrate birthdays as it is. A large group going out to dinner. That ain't gonna cut it for #40.

Oh.
See, that would be more than enough of a celebration for me...

Well, me too. I'm more about the people than the fluff stuff. BUT I like fancy parties as well (comfortable fancy parties).

<quoted text>I am not looking forward to my wife's 40th birthday. She is all about making a big deal out of them. I am not. For my 40th, she threw a big party. Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti party. But I don't feel it necessary. I would have been happy without one(and especially without the expense). That party cost us probably over $500. She felt I was a buzz kill cause every time she asked me something about the party, my main concern was the cost of the question. I told her to stop asking me if she didn't like my answers. Every question made me see $$'s jumping over the fence.
So as I said, I dread hers, cause I know I'm going to be expected to make a big giant deal out of it. For her last birthday, we had a party and she pretty much ran the show. One small issue out of many: I would have been fine with a mish mosh of leftover paper plates from kids parties and previous holiday parties and such. Hell no. That would look tacky. I don't care. To me, those plates serve a function. I don't care what's on them. With her, its as much about presentation. I don't care about presentation. Give me practical and cost saving. Ugghhh. Her 40th is gonna suck for me.
I'm with you. I had wonderful birthday parties as a child, but as an adult, I could just care less. I don't want or need gifts or a party, and don't want to hassle with arrangements and invitations. I'd rather go salsa dancing with friends. If someone wants to take me to a simple lunch, that's OK, too. Otherwise, just wish me a happy birthday on FB, we're good.

For your wife's 40th, you'll just have to suck it up and take out the plastic, because you KNOW how much hot water you will be in if you don't pull out all the stops.

Exactly! People who need to be in the spotlight and have parties in their honor have insecurity issues, in my book. Besides, I don't feel that getting older and outgrowing my youthfulness is cause for celebration anyway.

LW2:...I said that I didn't think that lunch was terribly celebratory...I would have been happy to see him any evening, but instead I got nothing...

And you *deserved* nothing, you stupid, stick-up-your-@ss btch. Lunch isn't "celebratory" enuff for you? Jebus--what a horrible, entitled btch you are. You're damn lucky your son is willing to have *anything* to do with you.
