I swear do you people come onto the blog to bash? I guess so because that what it seems to be. If you have no concern, or care what happen in Englewood then keep your comments to yourself! No matter who lived what kind of life this man was something to someone, and did not deserve to get gunned down.

No one has the right to take another's life. If it was someone NON BLACK you whiteys would be singing hymns, and sending condolences out to the family. You really need to be careful what you say.

Don't you think at some point, when this black on black killing, day after day, after day, and nobody knows anything, or saw anything, that we just get worn out. Really, this gun violence problem is a black and brown disease. It's shameful, it's ridiculous, and it going to continue until that community makes some major changes. This kind of stuff rarely happens in white communities, and I don't understand why this seems so normal in black areas.

Simple "Joe": It all comes down to socioeconomic status. I'm black and and I'm a law student. I live in a good part of a good suburb, and thats why I don't get shot, my friends who are black don't get shot, etc. Also thanks to my good upbringing and education, I see that gang life isn't a good thing. People who were never taught this end up shot or in jail.

As to why there are more crimes in "black" areas than "white" areas, I think the hundred of years of slavery, discrimination, and systematic exclusion from good jobs and education have something to do with it. There are some black people who, due to their higher than average intelligence and determination, have managed to overcome this, but your average person, be they black or white, doesn't seem able to. And since it is mainly black people who start out with this lack of opportunity and lack of good role models, we end up with these disproportionate crime stats.

OK,we get it. Its everyone elses fault!Noone else was ever discriminated against, the irish or the itilians or jews. Ther have been black colleges and universities in this country for a long time. Its amazing how someone like yourself that worked hard and made something of themselves always goes back and makes excuses for those that fail. You started your post out right(my good upbringing). This country gives opportunities to everyone. If people dont take advantage of it It's no ones fault but their own. Period!

Do you mind remembering somethings!
American is at War! Violence, murder, genecide
and the like are happening.
What makes Englewood or any other areas different from Afghanastan or other areas where murderous monsters organized or not find it a way of life- and why?
Have some compassion, it will help the healing.
The man is dead - actually he was murdered. He was a PERSON before being any stereotype!
For the rest of us who are alive, we should be a bit more humanistic about what we say and do and how we say and do it, understand that "mens rea" is actually a mind set i.e., behavioral, if you live with hatred, you are Diseased, and if the shoe fit wear it. And in terms of making excuses, there is never an excuse for hatred, bigotry, racism or discrimination-NEVER!

I was just asking if he was gay because gays were getting murdered. I have a gay brother, nothing against gays here. I love people; all people! I am sure that he was a wonderful man.

I HAVE A SUGGESTION DON'T JUST SAY WHAT YOU THINK OR POINT THE FINGER AT A PERSON. THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOW'S WHAT HAPPEN TO DANIEL IS HIM THE MAN UPSTAIRS WHO SEE'S AND HEAR'S EVERYTHING AND THE MONSTER THAT SNUFFED DANIEL LIFE AWAY FROM HIM. WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND KARMA IS A MOTHER FU----. EVERY DOG HAS IT'S DAY SOME HAVE 2 HE OR THEY WILL HAVE TO ANSWER TO THE MAN UP STAIRS AT JUDGEMENT TIME I FORGIVE HIM BUT ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE THEM.DANIEL MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE AND YOUR SPIRIT WILL ALWAYS REMAIN IN OUR HEARTS THE LAUGHS THE DANCING THE TRIPS AND JUST ENJOYING EACH OTHER I ENJOYED THE TIME YOU WAS HERE ON EARTH WITH US AND U WILL ALWAYS REMAIN A SOILDER IN MY HEART GOD HAS A PLACE FOR U WHERE THERE IS NO MORE WORRIES NO MORE PAIN AND SUFFERING REMEMBER SEE U FOR NOW.

That, in my opinion, is an excuse. I grew up dirt poor. I graduated high school because I knew I would never get anywhere without an education. Went into the military into a job that I knew would serve me on the outside. Blacks and whites have the same opportunity at education. The difference comes in whether they choose to take advantage of the education or not. My Mom only had a 3rd grade education, no money for tutors, etc. I studied, got extra help from teachers on my own when I needed it. There is not a teacher out that that is not willing to help a kid if they ask. If a child WANTS to learn, they all have the same chances to learn.

Let's face it society has failed the majority of children; this country has been and is still ignoring the majority of inner city kids who are in need of serious help.
We live in dalapidated slums are parents pay exsorbent rent to slum landlors areound this city be they black or white etc. We wake up in a cold apartment whether its summer or winter.
Sure many of you may say; well just move. Well it not that easy for many of us; to just pick up and move every six months.
We have the worst public school system in the nation; majority inner city schools are failing because of a variety of reason; and it has never been because are children can't learn.
Are children can and will learn; just give us what other area children has in their schools. Caring teachers; computers for every students, state of the art equipment, a school were there is running water, luke warm and cold, decent meals, I could go on and on. So let's wake up again AMERICA AND RECOGNIZE WHAT SOCIETY HAS DONE

This is actually a very important point that you bring up.But unfortunately those who are involved, directly or indirectly, are going to make excuses.

And that's the general disease that is destroying the AA community.
It's the crime, the drugs, the shootings, the gangs etc.
But the excuses more than anything seems to me to be the true "enabler".

first of all chicago is no longer the worst school system in the country. it has steadily improved.
i sent my daughter to a private school in the suburbs. the students there did not each have a computer, and far from everything was "state of the art".
but the PARENTS saw to it that the child was in school everyday, when the got home, homework was done, even if mom and dad were still at work(on average from 5-8th grade my daughter had 3-5 hours of homework a night, weekends too!!). she made use of the PUBLIC LIBRARY. she also did not "hang around" street corners or shopping malls. oh yes, she also was involved in after school activities, and participated in a sport that she practiced year round, three to four mornings a week, at 5:15am until she went to school at 8am. she had black girls on her team, and black students in her school(from the roseland area). and guess what, their grades were good, they weren't in trouble, and some of them are her best friends.
most of us parents weren't wealthy, most fammilies had two wage earners to pay the tuition. but we had a work ethic, that our parents had, and we hopefully instilled in our children.
in the evening when homework was done, it was checked by mom or dad.
MOM and DAD went to school events, teacher confrences, etc. my daughter was more important to me than "hanging on the corner".
there are inner city students that are doing fantastic in CPS,getting good grades, coming from single parent homes where mom has to WORK two jobs to get by. so IT CAN BE DONE! pouring more money into a system were students don't even come to school isn't going to help. i laugh every year when school administrators are going door to door asking kids to come to school on the first day. they offer sporting event tickets, ipods and other costly give aways(some donated, some bought) trying to encourage the kids to come to school.
i had encouragement, if i didn't show up the first day of school, my father would kick my butt! now that's encouragement!
so it's not the schools fault, it's not society's fault. it starts in the home, and until parents take a active role in the child, instead of looking at the child as another few bucks in the wlfare check.

Wow...another "friend" who knew the victim personally. How appropriate.Well ""A close family and friend"" why didn't YOU try to steer this pillar of society into a better lifestyle?
Could it be perhaps that you're as equally involved in the same lifestyle as he was?
Or was he just misunderstood?
Stop with the "victim" additude and go take his drug corner before it's too late!

Don't worry, you'll be next before you know it.
