Texting while driving: Illinois House backs ban aimed at distra...

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Sending text messages, downloading ring tones and surfing the Web while driving would be banned under legislation the House approved Wednesday as lawmakers decried what they said was a growing epidemic of fatal accidents caused by distracted driving.

Yep, you're right. There is no exemption for wireless devices in the "no phone in school/construction zone" bill, HB 72.

Consider as well the fact that construction workers are active in only... 10%(my estimate) of construction zones. 10 miles of highway are marked, but only a small percentage is actually being worked on...

Why do we continue to let lawmakers make unenforceable laws?

Look kids....yet another law. I don't agree with the act but my god come on. Parents how about setting some "laws" for your kids and adults act like one. Drinking and driving is social suicide and those people are losers....this is the same, they make a conscience decision to drive "impaired" as well. Can we merge these commercials into the LOSERS drinking and driving ones to save some advertising money while we're at it. The gov't doesn't and shouldn't have to take these measures. Only if these people would simply kill themselves I could write if off as natural selection, but no you idiots have to kill others too.

Aside from the helmet law, Nevada is a LOT less of a nanny state than IL. You've got it good out there and can, for the most part, do whatever you want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. That's true freedom right there.

So, we don't have enough cops out on the road to enforce red light-running and/or speeding (hence part of the rationale for "photo-enforcement") , but we have enough cops to enforce TWD (Texting While Driving)?!@# Come on!

I know people who text and e-mail while driving and/or at red lights, and it drives me nuts, but how do we enforce this? How long does a police officer have to ride along-side someone before knowing whether the driver is texting (versus placing a call, looking up a contact in her phone book, etc.). This is just another do-nothing piece of legislation that officers will enforce at their discretion (if at all)!

I can agree with banning texting while driving, but I do not agree with banning cellphone usage in construction and school zones, given that there are so many of both in our state, it may become near impossible to drive and talk without breaking the law.

"The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. " - Ayn Rand

Of course government always exempts themselves:

How about if you get into an accident while texting or talking on a phone (hands free or not), automatic suspension of your license and your car insurance will not cover the damages. Why do my rates have to go up to cover the yahoos who are screw ups!

My first question is: What would be just cause to initiate a traffic stop for texting while driving? I know people who show no signs, other than an occasional glance downward, that they are texting while driving. So is glancing down while driving now going to be a stoppable offense in Illinois? And will this not simply be used as an excuse to pull over anyone and everyone for no good reason? And how can you prove you were NOT texting while driving, if an officer says you have? Will an officer have the right to demand to see your cell phone to search your recent text logs? There are a lot of unanswered questions here. This is a good concept, but a bad law. But what else should I expect from the crooks and tyrants who run this state?

Nothing brings out the self-righteous masters on intellect faster than a story on cell phones. If these comments are to be believed, none of these people have EVER done ANYTHING stupid that endangered them or anyone else EVER. You know what else is dangerous? Driving 95 mph down a highway. Or changing lanes ILLEGALLY in a construction zone. Or suddenly swerving through TWO LANES of traffic from the far left lane of a six-lane highway to make sure you don't miss your exit into Woodfield Mall. And there are already laws to prevent these things, but it doesn't stop any number of people from committing these acts on a daily basis by the hundreds all around us. And yet these same people will lecture everyone else because they gasp! are talking on a cell phone. Please, spare me.

I can't believe that there were 27 "NO" votes.

Enforce the "driving while talking without a hands free cell phone device" and enforce "no texting while driving" and we'll cut deep into the the budget deficit.

Stick to the topic. That is the lamest defense known to man. "But someone somewhere else is doing something worse."

If something is wrong, it's wrong. Period. It's not wrong because it's worse than something else. It's just plan wrong. Texting while you're driving is stupid. You want to gripe about driving habits, I'm sure there is an other forum for that.

Two future options.

1) Insertion of a neuron-sensing chip in the back of your neck. This chip will allow you to impart your thoughts directly to your hand held device.

The downside: You will be highly sucseptible to mind control.

2)[My personal favorite] Installation of a signal jamming device. This device will block all incoming and outgoing signals from your hand-held device. The device will also have an automatic overthrow switch, AOS,(similar to your air-bag) allowing you to be a complete jerk while driving (this still is America you know).

The downside: The AOS is tied to your vehicle's black-box so that the police can cite you for reckless driving when you invariably get into another accident and/or kill someone because your "correspondence" just couldn't wait.

A hand-held jamming device will soon be available to the public so that signals can be blocked on public transportation vehicles. There seems to be a market for these devices, so they may be on the street faster than in your car.

I heard a rumour that Plan 1 of these options is like best by our government, but no further action is required because of our own stupidity. We'll soon demand that they get installed for our own "good". We obviously cannot control ourselves.

When learning to drive we are taught that BOTH hands are supposed to be on the steering wheel. Easiest thing in the world to enforce....stop anyone with less than two hands on the steering wheel...duh. Stops the phoning, eating, putting on make up, shaving, playing with ones self etc...
It won't stop the brainless who are listening to the radio and boogeying to the beat with their eyes closed, but it's a start!

Thank you Jesse White. Please keep trying to make driving safer for those off us in oncoming traffic from fools who look at their cell phones while driving, and who do all those other distracting and dangerous things people have listed. I'm tired of people swerving over into my lane while looking at a phone or turing wide almost into me because they are trying to do it one handed. I'm the one who's going to get killed. Maybe the police won't be able to pull the violators all over, but you can make the penalty for getting into an accident while doing it really high.

You know Illinois is going nuts - pretty soon you won't be able to talk in your car while driving. Granted tragedies occur but they do with everything. It's about time the legislature quit trying to regulate every aspect of citizens lives and give people some credit and trust them to make their own smart decisions.
