I am guessing they forgot to pack the cougar tranquilizers. Come on!!!! If the police would have waited for tranqulizers and the cougar escaped and killed someone, the city would have been in big trouble. It is sad, but they did the right thing. They protected the people and they protected themselves from any crazy lawsuit that would have come out of letting that cougar escape.

I feel the Chicago police handled the situation horribly. They had reports of a cougar roaming the Chicago area since this morning. Authorities should have had a plan in place when the cougar was found. Animal control should have been right there. Shooting that animal was uncalled for and absolutely wrong to do. The police went trigger happy firing shots three different times and unloading 6 bullets at a time. That animal should not have been killed. It did not have a history of hurting anyone.
Well What would you do

Being A Chicagoan I feel that they had to put the animal down. I know that area well. THere is a elementary school less than a Block away. It is reported that this cougar was jumping six foot fences like nothing entering backyards. I thank god no little child was harmed. I do feel bad for the poor Kitty but Chicago and cougars just dont mix. Sorry

What a joke. I looked at this from all perspectives. And even though it's understood that the cops were frantic and crapping their uniforms, I don't agree with killing a displaced animal. The excuse of not having a tranquilizer gun, no pun, is a 'cop out'

I don't think they were at all justified in killing the cat. Its mean, cruel and totally uncalled for. The people who support the idiots who killed this cougar should be kicked in the behind and the cops who shot the cat should be put in a vary small pit with some VARY BIG cats naked and defenseless and see how the cats treat them in return.

Come on people...think. For those who know the Roscoe Village area, its heavily populated with families and small children. Thankfully, no one was attacked. The last time the cougar was spotted (if it was the same one) was in Gurnee, IL, about 45 mi. outside of the city before it showed up in Chicago.

What sort of preparation time did that provide for the CPD? How could they have anticipated a cougar showing up in Roscoe Village!?

We're not talking about the systematic destruction of natural habitat or of the cougar itself. We're talking about a 150 lb. predatory animal out of its natural habitat removed from its usual food sources.

Some may call this "kitty" defenseless, I wonder if they would say the same if themselves, or their children, fell victim to it.

BTW--Traquilizer guns are not standard issue for Chicago police.

There was no need to walk towards that cougar and force him to feel trapped. They should have waited for a shooter with a tranquilizer gun. And the cops that did the shooting were horrible shots. The animal was not put down humanely. A tranquilizer gun should have been on the ready - there's got to be a better way than several bullets. Sad ending for a young, healthy cougar with no history of harming a human.

Right!! What a joke! They corner it in a alley & they wonder why the cat came at them. Again what a joke!!
