Derrek Lee sees truth in Obama's statement

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Barack Obama's biggest supporter in the Cubs' clubhouse is probably Derrek Lee , who won't be changing his vote because of Obama's description of Cubs fans as beautiful, beer-drinkers who don't come to Wrigley ...

Thank God modest utility players like DeRosa and Johnson make up for this inept prima donna.

I live a couple of blocks from Wrigley, and although I am a rabid Cubs fan, I must agree with both Sen. Obama and Lee. Of the 40,000+ people who attend every game, at least 20,000 are there for reasons other than supporting the team. Going to Wrigley is often a very unpleasant experience, and living where I do is almost always a hassle. The party people, the bimbettes who dress like hookers to go to a baseball game, and the tourists who come to worship at the grotto all make the Wrigley Field experience much less enjoyable for those of us who go to games to watch the team. No true Cubs fan should be offended by these comments. They are absolutely accurate.
What say to that, Cubs "fans"?

People complain when politicians are phony trying to appeal to the masses, but when one comes along with an honest opinion and sticks to his loyalties he's suddenly a bad guy. I simply don't get it. And what about Lee's comments? Why do Cubs fans ("real" ones I assume) get so uptight about what is obviously true? I'm not a baseball fan, but I have a lot of friends who are obssessed with the Cubs and they often complain about the same thing. Are you that insecure?

Cubs fans go to Wrigley do have a beer? Do any other fans of ANY sporting event do this? just wondering! the Marlins average about 21K per game - last saturday night that had 38k on a saturday night against the Cubs- 17k more fans than average! think that had anything to do with Cubs fans road trippin? guess they all came for the beer - a game earlier this year was the highest rated regular season game on Comcast in its history! guess it was sunny in everyone's living room and the beer was cold- the Cubs have the 4th best road attendance in all of baseball - AGAIN does this have anything to do with all of those "W"'s you see after every Cub victory - I've traveled to San Fran, San Diego, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Pittsburgh to see my Cubs play - but cubs fans don't care about who wins the game? please!- To the people who say cub fans don't care please go to a game in April or May when it's 40 ouside and the wind in blowing in off of the lake and the place is sold out! how come cub fans stand in the 7th, 8th or 9th inning of a tight game when the pitcher gets 2 strikes on a hitter? guess they don't care and aren't paying attention to the score- GO CUBS GO!

mack, I actually went to a white sox game last Friday to see them get beat by the Rays-
standing on the concourse with alot of Sox "fans" who were getting drunk and couldn't tell me the score of the game- but hey at least they had a sellout because it was Elvis night- We don't need gimmicks and such to have fans- is it half way to St. Patrick's day or it is dog day or half price monday? put it on the board whimparoo! have the sox white flagged it yet like in th late 90's because they couldn't catch Cleveland 3 games out in early August- pathetic! 3 games out in august and they quit! or did they cut another hall of famer (FISK) in midseason to play ron Karkovice- clueless and classless organization!

But yet even your fellow cub fans admit it. Let me guess, you're one of those guys that has the cutesy retro hat with the cute little bear on it holding a baseball bat, right? AWWWWWW! Or else, like a chump suburbanite, you paid twenty bucks for a white t-shirt with a 'w' on it? And you sing that gay song after the games? Man, are you the bottom of the barrell.

You don't need gimmicks? Dude, Wrigley Field is the biggest marketing gimmick in ALL OF SPORTS! I bet you own one of those Wrigley Field t-shirts (are those things stupid or what?). You are not bright are you?

As the father and husband of die-hard Cub fans, I couldn't disagree more with Obama's sentiments. The problem is that the Cub fans out in the nether regions of the state and many within the city of Chicago just cannot afford to go to the games. The joy of being at the stadium was experienced for the first time by our younger children last week and we ended up at a Cubs' game as our summer vacation. Our oldest daughter knows the batting averages and era's of each player and follows every game. No, it is not that the Cubs fans do not know their baseball, it is that the corporate mentality of those that take up the seats diminishes the chances for the "true" fans.

Derreck Lee, I can 't believe you really feel that way about Cub fans. You think the people in the stands are out of towners just checking out Wrigley. How in the world would they get tickets!!! I have to work the phones and the internet for hours just to try and get tickets for a couple games. I do believe Cub fans are some of the most knowledgeable fans in baseball. You really disappoint me on this one. GO CUBS!!!!!

come on, this stereotype is not surprising and if many of you take a minute to think, you'll know it's pretty spot-on. i have been to the bleachers and have been surrounded by people who care more about partying that paying attention to the game. it's very distracting and makes it impossible to keep up with my score card. this isn't the first time this has been said about cub fans. my husband has gone to games at busch stadium and he said that every fan is on edge and totally tuned into every pitch. i know a lot of cub fans are tuned in, but there are plenty who are only there to party and soak in the "wrigley experience", which should include being glued to the game, but ends up getting too drunk.
however, one cardinal fan friend has historically said the same thing, but said this has gotten much better this season - he sees more real fans than real partiers...
