You're in Chicago, right? How much further north do you want to go? I thought all the retirees came down to my neck of hte woods. |

Or to California....I love it here. I still have friends in Chicago but would not move back. I can't do that cold stuff any more.I have only been to Florida once so I will not make any judgments. But Florida is not fond of unions so I doubt I would do well there. |

We'd like to retire to Maine or Minnesota. Somewhere cold with good fishing. Maybe the UP. |

That Upper Peninsula -- as in Upper Michigan I believe. Excellent downhill skiing there too. |

You're right. It's beautiful country. There's a little town called Pine Stump Junction, pop 12. It's named that because the official (& only) mailbox is nailed to a pine stump. That's my kind of country! |

A high school friend of mine used to go to the Norway/Iron Mountain Michigan area with her family every summer. They loved it. Her mom retired up there. |

Yup, union is a four-letter word in Florida, but that speaks more of the Florida schools system!! |
|||
|
As a teacher, I'm not a member of our union in Florida--they're in bed with the school district and do nothing for the price of their dues...no thanks.

Does that mean the students are taught in social studies classes that they should be thankful they get jobs not that they deserve fair pay, job security and benefits? |

does that mean you turn down whatever benefits are won by the union in the contract and negotiate your own? Would they still represent you if you were falsely accused of something? |
|||
Of course not. The little negotiation benefits all, so don't try the emotiona manipulation route as if I shouldn't receive it. I'm sure trying to deny it/negotiate myself would be quite a hoot and waste of time and money for all. Like I said, when it matters, and in the face of obvious errors that affect our testing, they refuse to change...they are as corrupt as the government I work for. No, they would not represent me, but anyone can get representation and there are private companies that represent teachers at a more reasonable cost. |

1 I always find it fascinating when people want what a union negotiates for them but don't want to pay for it...your benefits, however slight they may be at this time, are better than non union jobs and you do benefit from their negoiations... We have those types of people her too..funny how they come begging for help when they are about to be disciplined....you know exercising rights ( no matter who represents them union or private) that the union won for them - instead of being an at will employee who can just be fired without cause. No emotional manipulation..just fact..and please explain why you should get it since you don't want them to represent you? |
