Tonka, if you raise your kids the way I think you are raising them, then your purpose has been served.

A life of leisure and more disposable income.

Canoeing in the Boundary Waters as a teen, we had to put the food up in a tree at night. That was always the big way the boys could prove how cool they were, by how quickly one could climb the tree or toss the rope over a branch.
But then one year, one of our adults (a parent of one of the boys) brought a pulley and that was the end of the tree climbing. It actually worked much better anyway.
When I was a kid, we took a 2 week trip "out west" and stopped at Yellowstone. We had a pop up trailer, so the cooler (one of those old metal coleman's) got left outside or in the car. We had to call the ranges one night, however, when we caught a mother and a couple of kids cooking steak on an electric fry-pan in the bathroom! Idiots.
We were out at Yellowstone/Glacier two years ago. We're probably doing the "Canyon Tour" this summer (Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Grand Canyon).

Nice! We'll be doing that when the girls get a little older. Mom is now a snowbird in AZ, so that will make it even easier.

I can't wait to go back to the Grand Canyon. I worked there for 6 months many years ago and would like to see how it's changed.

I can recommend the blue corn pancakes at El Tovar. They're probably expensive but totally worth it. Yummy!

I debated Grand Canyon this year with my daughter, but it didn't work out time-wise. I think we are going to drive up north and stop in a different city or two on the way. She would love it out west, though!

El Tovar is on the South Rim, right? Last time I was on the South Rim, the crowds did not amaze me :( And that was in the off-season. I think we'll probably go to the North Rim instead, especially since the other canyons/parks are north too.

Yes, it is.

I can totally understand about the crowds being a turn-off. Imagine working there...
