She's not asking him if he put the milk back in the fridge. There, a simple "yes" would suffice, no need to elaborate. When you ask someone how your mother is feeling, "fine" is not a satisfactory answer. An answer to that requires a little more elaboration.

Yes, if you can't have dinner without your nose in your phone, you have a serious problem.

Maybe to you. Fine is my standard answer.

My dad asks how my father in law is doing? Fine.

Father in law asks about my dad? Fine.

Someone I ain't seen in a while asks how the wife and kids are doing? Fine.

Younger kid's daycare worker asks how the older one is doing(he used to go to same day care)? Fine.

How's the new job? Fine.

Maybe you wanna tell the in-laws that your dad lost his job or get into how your father in law is smoking behind his wife's back or how your wife has been getting sick a lot lately or give details about how your kid has been misbehaving at school.

Me? I'll just answer with, "fine".

So you're not much of a conversationalist. Fine. Short, quip answers with no elaboration can come off as a rude response.

Personally, I would only ask the question out of politeness anyway. I really dont want to hear that your kid has head lice or your wife has vaginal itching.

"Fine" is the answer I was looking for.

I don't see a lot of commercials but I did see this one and it really stuck out to me. How HORRIBLY rude and this commercial makes it seem like it's normal and OK. I know it's only TV, but if this happened IRL, I would like to think MOST people would employ some social skills and gently change the track of the conversation. That's called being gracious and polite.

It saddens me that this probably WILL be considered a normal thing to do when people get bored.

My kid started to play on her iPod at Easter dinner. I took it and put it away. Learn to have conversation and treat people like they actually matter.
