Very inspirational. Its nice to hear there are still great parents out there, and kids who listen and strive to make something of their lives.

I'm a parent of two and we have a very "free-form" house with our kids... we try to teach them that the act of learning is fun and we're going to trust that they'll learn material of their own valition... This is an encouraging article as it seems they had the same child-rearing philosophy.

So many parents these days are trying to force their kids to learn rigid curriculum at such an early age that I think they're going to find that their kids don't ENJOY learning, so teaching them will become more and more of a daily fight as they get older. These parents are so hung up on the ends (you must LEARN this material so you get GOOD GRADES so that you get into a GOOD SCHOOL so that you make GOOD MONEY...etc. etc.), that they neglect the most optimal means, which is a JOY OF LEARNING. If you enjoy learning and are not insecure about the fact that you never know enough, then the rest (good grades, good school, good money) will take care of itself. If your only looking after the ends and neglect the means, you'll find yourself coming up short and hating on those who make it without necessarily being obsessed with the ends.

Just my opinion. I guess we'll see in a decade or so.

Rena Sereno was my art teacher at Prairie Elementary School in Naperville (17 years ago!). I'm glad to hear her family is doing well.

This is an awesome, extremely inspiring story. The Serenos sound like a lively bunch; what I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall during one of their symposiums ... priceless! I'm sure this family has had its fair share of bumps in the road, but it sounds like each member is better for it. Wishing you all much continued success ...

The pic of Paul Sereno doesn't do him justice. That is one good-looking man in person. And a very nice man. He takes inner city kids to digs with him to expose them to palentology. I think he's a great person and it's great his entire family is being showcased. We need to hear more of these types of stories.
What a good story

Awesome story. I hope I have the patience, intelligence and drive to teach my children (4 boys) the same way the Serenos did. In the end we come out with a better community, a stronger country and a whole, peaceful planet. The only sad part was learning that these 2 wonderful parents divorced. Oh well.

All that and the parents still got divorced! Amazing.

Wow. No other words. This is obviously a magical combination of both genetics (nature) and parenting (nurture). Two special people coming together to create six special people. Talk about giving back. Great, uplifting story. I am humbled, and they should be proud.

Inspiring on all levels. You don't have to be rich to make sure your kids excel, you just have to be passionate about learning and teach the right priorities.

Wearing hand-me-down clothing is nothing. Nothing at all.
