She referred to "stretch tights" which are generally more like tight exercise pants.
All he sounds like to me is a member of a particular egoistical subset of body builders who tend to be particularly inane and hog the weight room. Tight exercise pants, those support belts, and you'll never see a single hair on them. They're also juicing or taking other supplements which can sometimes make them start acting pretty strange.
I think those guys are all mainly straight. They always seem to have younger women who follow them around and drool at their "perfect" bodies. If I was her, I'd be more afraid he's doing this to try to attract one of them. I don't know what you'd call them ... gym bunnies?
That's sorta what I was thinking. It sounds to me like there might be some younger chick he's trying to impress. Old guys can be stupid.:)

LW2: I'm with Sublime for the most part. I don't see anything wrong with a man exfoliating, shaving, or putting on lotion. So he doesn't like body hair or dry skin, biggie deal. The weird thing to me was the women's stretch tights and a girdle. I go to the gym regulary and NONE of the guys there wear stretch pants. They wear shorts or long, loose workout pants. So to answer the LW's question, no, other men don't commonly do this. So he's an unusual kind of guy.

I didn't see him as being a jerk at all, but maybe because this sounds like the perfect relationship to me!
I see him as being upfront from the begining about what he wants, and getting tired of her trying to badger him into changing his mind in order to do what she wants (get married).
ITA though, that they want completely different things and she should cut him loose to find someone who does want marriage. Wouldn't be surprised if he dumps her.
I think it was because LW said that he said "Don't start with me" which comes off as rather jerky.

Is it really a girdle, or is she referring to it as a girdle?
There are support belts for working out that kind of look like a girdle. They're used a lot in lifting, aren't they? I've seen a lot of guys wearing them, particularly in the weight rooms.
Yes, guys do wear weight lifting belts, but they are not called girdles (and certainly if he talked about it to her, he would say stop referring to it as a girdle ... its a belt, you ninny) and anyone wearing one would be a serious weight lifter, not some guy who is just joining the gym.

Also anyone who wore one, would know they are for protecting your back, not for sweating or whatever lame excuse the wannabe he-she told his wife he wears it for.

Weight lifters also don't wear women's stretch pants.

Boy, you and PDE are tailor made for a gay guy who wants everyone to think he's straight.

Toj: Silly, my bf is not gay. He just likes going to gay dance clubs wearing while wearing a$sless chaps, because, according to him, they play better music at such clubs, he doesn't like it when women hit on him, and he stays cooler in his chaps when the dance clubs can get hot."

I'm thinking the wife is calling it a girdle and tights and he is not. The reason why is that she makes no mention of a bad sex life. It doesn't make sense that out of the clear blue he is "turning gay". While I know some people were secretly gay and come out of the closet in marriages, and other try on certain life styles b/c of whatever is going bad in their life, this seems like a different kind of scenario.

Of course, I don't know. Neither do you.

Yeah, I could see where someone else would think he's an azzhat. Like I said, I think I am probably biased in his favor cuz I would love that relationship. So I give him the benefit of the doubt that he is just responding to her being a PITA.
Maybe that's not it at all, and my gut reaction is making me see what isn't there.

I'm taking LW at her word that these are women's stretch pants and not men's pants. If he is truly wearing women's pants and possibly a women's girdle, that is weird. He could be a cross-dresser. Not all cross-dressers are gay.

So, you are going to assume you know better than the letter writer who actually lives with the guy and assume heís not actually wearing womenís stretch pants and a girdle, even though the only person with first hand knowledge of the situation, i.e. the LW, says he in fact wears these things?

But, why stop there? Why not go full bore Toj on the fact pattern and just say that maybe the LW is just saying that he shaves himself when he really is just naturally hairless Ö and maybe the wife just says he puts lotion on his legs, but when he really just washes his legs with moisturizing soap when he showers.

Why not go full sublime and get all heated and crazy over some stupid letter? It's been awhile since you've done that. You're due.

Because, like as Abby said, if he was wearing those inappropriate things to the gym, the reactions would probably stop him pretty quickly. He is most likely wearing something that is appropriate for working out at the place where he works out.

It is more likely to be a wife who is being catty about calling gym clothing she doesn't like by the most derogatory terms she can find for them.

What possible motive could there be for her to be catty about his clothing if he is wearing appropriate clothing? It makes no sense that she would make out clothing that is not feminine to be as such or why she would have a problem with it in the first place. Are you saying she just doesnít like the colors he wears?

Other than say athletic pants, which are not stretch pants, by any *stretch* of the imagination, I donít know any guys who wear pants of any sort in the gym. Perhaps sweat pants, but even those arenít stretch pants and few folks wear that sort of stuff in todayís day and age and if he is wearing super tight sweat pants, trust me folks would look at him like he's urkle.

Also as I said, anyone who wore a weight lifting belt, would almost certainly not be someone who just joined a gym and they would know why you wear one, which is not for sweating Ö itís for you back and they are usually brown leather, and look anything but feminine. They are also worn by guys who are almost always lifting very heavy weights, not some newbie. Iím also not seeing why or how anyone could mistake that as something that is as feminine as a girdle, even if she did not like it.
