If it was near Foster, I bet he hit a pot hole, not a curb

It would be nice if the story stated if he was wearing a helmet or not. Odds are he wasn't, which is too bad.

My condolences to the family. It would be instructive if the Trib would report whther a helmet was worn or in the case of cars, seat belts.

It would also be nice if the story stated what kind of bike he was riding

Why? So you can reinforce some uninformed prejudice? I just rode 4,800 miles last week and passed all types of bikes. Besides the fact that cruisers can't get out of their own way, the only difference was the ability of the riders. This was rider error, he either put himself into a situation without an out or he just didn't know how to control his bike.

Helmets are required by law in many other states, why not here? And why would you NOT wear one when it could save your life? Even if you're an expert rider who never loses control, there are plenty of cars and trucks on the road who could hit you at any time because they're not observant enough to see a motorcycle next to them, so the helmet protects you from THEM more than anything.

I drove past this accident site shortly after it happened. There had to be at least 15 police cars on the scene and two lanes of traffic closed northbound. The debris field went into the median and was over 150 feet. I hoped that the rider was okay, but the ambulance had already left -- just the cop cars and debris... He had to have hit a pot hole or curb at a pretty high rate of speed to see the number of pieces on the road and in the median. I see a lot of motorcycles speeding up or down LSD all the time. My regrets to his family, I am sure he was a good man who had a very powerful motorcycle.

The Trib has no problem telling us when it's an SUV that hit someone/thing instead of just saying it was a vehicle. So, why not say what type of bike?

Moving from Chicago to a deserted island could prevent you from being shot on the street. Everyone should move

There's no such thing. EVERYONE loses control at some point. Skill can only help you regain it before the bike goes down, but random circumstances can trump any level of skill. Agreed on your helmet statements...it's foolish to ride without one, not just for the rider but for other motorists. A rock to the unprotected head at 60mph = 400 lb. bike flying all over traffic.

Was this motorcyclist wearing a helmet and riding gear? I noticed there are more ads now for the Motorcycle Riding School, which is a free program.

I feel sorry for his family. He was so young.

The police are cracking down on wearing seatbelts because they save lives, doesn't the same logic apply to helmets as well? I guess until you also lose a friend from a bike accident, you won't understand the desire to keep people safe and will continue to post idiotic comments on message boards. Good luck finding your deserted island.
I agree that you probably should wear a helmet, as well as a seatbelt. However, why should the police have any say in whether or not you should wear them. If you choose not to wear a helmet, then your taking a huge risk. Its a choice.

Illinois does NOT have a helmet law for over 18 year olds. Please check on that for me and post your results here.

<quoted text> Apparently there are lots of motorcyclists who don't want to wear helmets, I get it. Just don't cry foul when you lose a friend to a accident that could have been prevented by a helmet.
i already have. but it's a big world. i'd never jump out of a perfectly good airplane. some people do it every chance they get. before mandating helmets, i'd like to see safety courses mandated. i don't know what this guy was riding, but i do know that there are plenty of bike shops that make a ton of money selling crotch rockets to young guys. i think riding without an m-class license and proper training is dumber than hell.

Sorry, no sympathy here. I get get cut off, passed on the shoulder and all other sorts of crap you wouldnt get away with in a four wheeled vehicle to have one ounce of sympathy for any of these prople. If you are stupid enough to assume the risk and selfish enough to put that burden on your family then you get what you deserve. Make it a law to wear helmets already and you may see a drop in the Darwin theory.
