Wait a second, aren't you the guy who let some teenage girl walk all over you when she lived with you?
No.

Who here thinks edog was in bed at 9 p.m. while a high schooler?
It's all relative. I can't say I had a specific bed time in high school, but I did get myself up in the morning. If my kid could get himself up, was getting good grades and was otherwise a good kid, I probably wouldn't push a bed time. But if it was a struggle to get him up, he was falling asleep in class, and doing poorly in school, I would probably force some type of bed time.

Hmmm.
Someone on here had a teen living in his house who "drank his milk", had her BF sleeping over in her room even though that was explicitly forbidden, threw a party with underage consumption going on.

WHo could that have been?

Now, that sounds like backpedaling. Maybe it's just a clarification.

Either way, the LW expressed that her parents are flexible when it comes to her sister but not her. That's going to create problems, but I suspect the reason is that the younger sibling pushes back more.

I'm not saying that she should be a jerk about it, but it's probably in her own interest to start pushing back. That could be as simple as pointing out that she's otherwise responsible, gets up on her own (if that's true), gets good grades (if that's true), etc. and that she should have some flexibility to start staying up later. Even you suggest that under those circumstances, you'd be flexible.

But if she doesn't push for what she wants, she's not going to get it. It's perfectly healthy for teenagers to push for independence and to challenge boundaries, especially for minor things like a 9pm bedtime.

No, it aint backpedaling. I never said my kid was going to bed at 9 pm come hell or high-water, alls I said was 9 pm sounds reasonable for a school night.

Maybe the 14 yo doesn't get good grades, maybe she doesn't get up on her own (this was never mentioned in the letter.) Maybe that's why the parents won't give her any flexibility. Maybe a specific bedtime is a minor thing for some, but it could be a major thing for others. Pushing for independence is one thing, outright rebelling and refusing to do as you're told is another. I don't believe children should get to dictate what rules their parents set for them.

I hope LW1 is fake. My only advice to her would be that she should be ashamed of herself.

LW1: Wow. You are so effed up, immature and selfish I wouldn't even know where to begin.

LW2: Your parents really don't like you. Seriously.

As a parent or a guardian of someone living in my house, this is true.
Dog, do you actually think that anyone here believes a single word you write is true?
ROFLMAO

You know that old adage, "We're not laughing at you--we're laughing with you"?
Well, switch that around and maybe you'll see the truth...
